67 Door Handle Replacments - problem and solution

I found that aftermarket door handles for '67 trucks don't exactly match the originals, and if you don't fix it your handles won't fit. See the pics below...

Pic 1: Notice that the bolt's angle of attack is different. This means that the top of the door handle will be loose when you tighten down the bolt and it will leave an ugly gap.

Pic 2: You can see the angles by looking through the door handle hole. Since the blue and red lines are not parallel, the aftermarket handle won't tighten up.

Pic 3: My solution - take some old hex nuts (you'll need 2 per handle) and grind them down into wedges. The wedge angle should match the difference between the orig. handle and the new. Basically matching the triangle in pic 1. You'll also need slightly longer bolts.

Pic 4: The results - nice and tight handles on a dusty truck.

That is strange. My originals and replacements are both normal (90 degrees) to the mounting surface therefore they do not require any wedges.

I'm told by the vendor that this is an issue with '67 doors and that all aftermarket handles have this problem.

Learn something new every day. I just looked at my two sets of '67 doors and they both have the sheet metal indentation. I have never pulled the handles. My '68 and newer doors all have the "normal" screws and do not need the wedge.

yes the 67 outer door handles are different than 68-72. I learned that the hard way when i was putting my orginal 68 door handles on my replacement 67 doors, it didn't work so good. lol
