might be the end of the road, how much for my truck?

Looks like it may be time in life to part with my truck. As much as it pains me, this is an option I have to consider. My problem is, I could never sell it for what it's worth to me. I need some ideas as to what I should list it for. If it does come down to it, I'll probably list it high and firm to make saying goodbye worthwhile.
For those of you unfamiliar with my truck, here's a picture and some details;

1987 SWB Silverado (not much left of the trim though)
I've owned it 12 years.
3,000 miles on a Goodwrench 350
100,000 on the rebuild for the 700R4
custom sub-bed fuel cell
lowered 6/8 (spindles & coils/flip kit & hangers)
billet grill
Camaro side mirrors
shaved trim
shaved tailgate
moulded steel rear pan
billet interior trim panels & dash panel
late model Dodge bucket seats
16" Centerline wheels

No telling what else. In total, whatever's still original on the truck has approximately 230,000 miles. It has a custom black with purple pearl paint, but is due for a repaint (job is about 7 years old).

I'd appreciate any input.

I have had the same problem. I would like to sell mine to pay off my daily driver but I cannot get any decent offers. I set a price and people would lowball me but I guess that's just part of selling vehicles. I am just going to sit on it now and maybe do some more work to it.

I hate to see you sell that truck Greg Maybe Dave would want to buy it since his has been stolen. It would be a great truck for him to complete. But it's hard to place a price on a "member of the family". My best suggestion would be Ebay and set a high enough reserve.

What makes this situation what it is, this IS my daily driver and work truck. If I had something else I'd put the 87 in the garage and baby it. Might try the eBay thing in a few days. How's it going Brandon? Long time no BBQ.

It's still undecided, but a definite possibility. I'm not real happy about it, and Valerie is doing everything to talk me out of it. We'll see how this next week goes.

Do some real deep thinking on it. Do not so something that you might regreat later. How would you feel seeing someone else enjoying your truck. Just make sure you are doing the right thing for you. I am talking from experence. That is really a beauty.

Why not do the e-bay thing for a cheap < $1000 compact car/truck to use for the daily grind? There's lots of Mazda, 'Yota, & Isuzu trucks & a gazillion cars listed. Maybe something like that would be better?

Greg listen to Valerie she knows what's right Yeah it has been long time no BBQ. LOL!! I also agree with Scoti and you need to get a cheap transportation to and from work even if it's a beater truck to haul your tools if you're still landscaping. You won't get enough $$$ to make up the loss in your heart.

I agree Greg. Think real hard about all this. Don't do something you will hate yourself for later. I think the way it looks now, I will never get rid of my 85. I have way too much money in it to sell it. I couldn't stand the thought of someone else getting it for nothing and reaping the rewards of all my money and labor.

Of course I completely understand how it is having to do what you have to do. My truck wouldn't be worth a dime to me for a work truck. Can you not find something cheap to drive for a work truck and just keep the 87? You'll hate yourself someday if you give it away. I say give away because it's almost a give away. You know you'll be lucky to get half what you have in it. Just the way it is.

Oh, and I remember when you put the Camaro mirrors on it. I thought that was a very cool mod then and still do to this day.

Cool

Why? Why do you have to sell it ? Fuel prices? baby on the way?

Any ways i remember giving you alot of info on a TPI system installation what happen to that project i didn't see it listed in your mod's.

Im with the others get some beater mini truck and park the '87.

And if the female says keep it then do what she says!

Whats wrong with you? Have you gone or something.

Most here could give you an accurate asking price but the average joe thats looking to buy a truck won't agree with it cuz they have no idea what there looking at most will say but it's just a truck! why so much $$?

Also i think it's gonna be hard to get anything close to your asking price because of fuel prices today not alot of people are in the market for a 4000# fuel guzeling beast.

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

The thing about getting a $1000 beater to work out of is the headache of keeping that going. I've had a $1000 vehicle before.

Anyways, looks like I'm going to keep the truck. For some reason, no matter how much sealing I do, I can't keep water out of the gas tank. When I'm in the middle of a hard day's work and break down heading back to the shop I get pretty bent out of shape.

87STEPPER, after a lot of research I decided to stick with the TBI that's on there. I still think TPI is the coolest looking FI system though.

PISO RIDES ON!

I went through this decision process about 2 years ago. I decided to keep my '85 and buy a car to drive to work. I bought a granny "kept in garage" camry for $3500 and have already made back that much in gas savings.
35,000 miles since purchase. truck = 9mpg, camry = 27mpg.
35,000/9=3889 gallons for truck, 35,000/27=1296 for camry.
3889-1296=2593 gallons difference @ around $2.00/gal avg for 2 years =
WOW over $5000 savings. I didn't realize how much till I typed this up.
Feedback if my numbers don't look right.

Greg,
I thought you changed gas tanks and moved its location? what are the sealing issues now?

Greg, if you are running that crappy stock cap, and have it exposed to the elements to boot...you need to start there. Put a door over it (and seal that too), and get a better cap for the cell.

Here are a couple pics of the cap assembly I removed from mine, and a pic of my current setup.

The fuel cell is under the bed now, but water is still getting in there somehow. I'm using the stock cap but was looking for a replacement. On top of that, in the bed floor, is a boat deck plate. Between the bottom of the deck plate and the corrugated bed floor I put adhesive backed storm door foam then sealed around that with black silicone.

I'm going to replace the cell cap, where did you get that one Jeff? I didn't see that one when looking at the replacement caps at Summit. I'm also going to be replacing the deck plate and try sealing it better.

All in all, removing the factory tanks and using the fuel cell (both of them) has been the greatest curse ever placed on my truck.
