Rear end gears, how to tell what they are?
Is there anyway to tell what the gears are in the diff? Really do not want to pull the back off and if I did still do not know how to tell. Would just like to know what I have back there.

Go to Jiffy-Lube and get your rear gear oil changed. Count the teeth on both the ring and pinion while they have the cover off. Any other way and you are just guessing. Plus, it probably needs to have the oil changed anyway if you don't know when it was last done.

If the ring gear is exposed and it is a GM gear the number will be stamped like 41/11. Take the first number divided by the second.

count the rotations on the driveshaft versus 1 full turn of the tire. gm gears only come in certain ratios so its not hard to figure out!

Still would not know what the gears are. 1 full turn of the tire and say 3 turns of the driveshaft would tell you what? 3 to 1=??

its not going to be exactly 3 turns! a little less than 3 and a half would be a 3.42 a little more than 3 and a 3/4 would be a 3.73!
You follow me.
