OT:Just bought a vette and need help with bearings.

Doing the rear wheel bearings/seals on a 1968 Stingray that I just picked up. I was looking for some pointers and or tips for doing it. One side was done by P/O and seems excellent. The other side on the other hand is a mess . I have the spindle out and everything apart just about ready to stick it back together...any thoughts and or advice would be helpfull. Thanks to the best board on the web.

Douglas.

Douglas,

I agree that this board is great but it is a truck board and your C3 rear wheel bearings are foreign to truck guys. I don't think the powers that be would mind if I suggested the best Corvette board that I know of for you to get a hand on your project. Go to www.corvetteactioncenter.com and check on the C3 forum. You will get all the help you need. Register (free) and you will also have access to the most complete Corvette info site there is.

I wonder how many other truck guys here are also Corvette owners, other than you and me.? I have a '59 and an '81.

Tom

I've done it but its been a long time ago. I do remember you need to get the correct amount of freeplay on them. I used a dial indicator and had to modify the shims between the bearings. That seems to have been the most critical part. I used a Motor's Manual book for reference. I lost a bearing and spindle on one side so I changed both sides for insurance. Find a Chilton's or Motors Manual for reference and good luck.

I just sold my 81 Z28 to buy a C3 vette. While I don't have any info on the wheel bearings, I'd love to see as picture of yours, and other members ones. I doubt I'll be able to find a chrome bumper C3 in my price range, but they are what I'd prefer. The first Vette I ever rode in was a 68 convertible.

go to corvetteforum.com go to c3 section and search or ask for threads on subject. that job requires a few and expensive specialized tools to do it correctly.

There is one thing that is true about this forum and that is that a lot of the members here also own other things besides trucks and also know how to work on them. See my signiture.
I have done the bearings on my 1974 and the hardest thing to do is to get the spindle out of the housing. I bought the bearings and races and the seals from a bearing outlet for $70.00 for both wheels. A manual is a must though for the specifications and instructions.

There are also sources for complete rebuilt trailing arm assemblys. I your arms are damaged or have rust in the bottom of them this would be the way to go.
