Question Help w/ Dodge Durango

A bud of mine bought a 2000 Durango 5.9 V8 towing package, loaded. He is wanting to get better mpg out of this monster. Has already did the K&N air filter and wants to know what other types of mods would improve his mpg. chip, cyclone, ram air, or something. Any suggestions would be greatly appreaciated. Just trying to help a bud out.

There's only one thing that can help the poor guy, slap him up-side-the-head and tell him to get a real truck! What was he thinkin'?

If he wants better gas Mileage, then he should sell it and get a Honda. He should have been prepared for crappy gas mileage when he bought it. Did he think the 5.9 stood for cups instead of liters.

There is a slight improvment to be had in the exhaust system. The exhaust is really plugged to pass sound regulations. Several companys make cat back exhaust, but you better do a lot of towing. The systems are $350 and up and the MPG improvement is slight, so it takes a while just to get your money back.

A friend of mine also owns one and says the same thing. It gets crappy mileage, maybe 15 on the highway. Seems to be the way they are. Sorry, don't have any suggestions, except to buy a Tahoe or Burb, they both seem to do better on gas mileage and perform the same, plus more room. Cool family hotrod.

Actually Josh, He sold his Honda to buy the Durango. Im sure he was prepared for less mpg compared to the Honda, and I'm pretty sure he knew what 5.9 meant. He's willing to try any gas saving mods for this vehicle, and I told him I would post a message and see what everyone thought. Maybe someone could point us in the right direction. There are a lot of good folks on this board and I was hoping someone could help us out.

FYI Chevy's don't get better mileage if you get the same package.
I have a 2001 1500HD with the 6.0 and towing package. The best milage it has ever got was 17 on the highway, and I think that was downhill with a tailwind. When I pull my big trailer it gets 8mpg on the highway, and what really sucks is it only has a 26 gallon tank.

His best bet would be the exhaust. But like mentioned before, it's pricey. All those mid sized SUV's get crappy mileage. Just somethign you have to live with. You can't take the window sticker mileage for real when you buy it. They are calculating that on a flat surface in perfect conditions. I know for a fact that the Trailblzers don't get near the mileage they advertise. 2 people I know have them, and say the same thing. If you drive it like a normal person, you get less. Sucks needing a truck to tow toys with. I would trade in my F/S 98 Z-71 for a car, but I need to tow the boat. And there is no way I'm getting rid of the boat. So you just live with it.

Just my 2 cents.
