I need help???

I need help please,,,,,,,I really feel stupid,,, I am replacing my speedometer gears on my 700-r4 trans. The problem is i wasn't paying enough attention when i took the gear off of the trans tail shaft. I notice 2 holes on the tailshaft that the prong of the clip rides in. My question is which hole does the clip ride in???? the one closest to the front of the truck or closest to the rear??? Also is there any certain way that is easier when installing the clip into the gear keyway??? Thanks,,,,, Matt

Re: I need help???

It's been so long since I worked on mine I can't remember. I might be wrong but I believe it's the front hole. I'm pretty sure if you look at the shaft real close you will be able to see where the old gear was. I do know the clip goes with the loop end toward the front. The little tang sticking up is what holds the gear from sliding to the back. What I did was to slide the gear almost all the way on and then stick the clip in the hole. Press down on the tang to start the gear and then just push it on up until the tang pops up behind the gear.

Again, not sure on which hole but look at the shaft and see if you can tell where the old gear was. It should be either lighter or darker than the rest of the shaft.

Re: I need help???

If you can't tell that way, put it on so it's in the front hole, then put the housing back on it, then look down in the hole where the driven gear goes. The drive gear should be in line with the center of that hole. If not, try the other hole.
