Door panels under carpet
Started tearing another apart this week and this one may be too much!!
Got the frame totally stripped of all parts cause it was rusted beyond salvage back by the shock mounts. Pulled the cab yesterday and got it set up on the stand. Pulled the capet ,seat and gas tank and found that the po had welded the floor with some 68 or so door panels. Also used part of the glove box to hold the expanding foam in the cab corner!! At least I know what happened to the glove box!!!!!! Any way here''s some pics but I don't know if this one is gonna live the rust running clear across the back under the tank and some in the drip rails above the doors make me think that a few minutes of silence is in order!

Re: Door panels under carpet
Oh my, thats a little tough even for Iowa, that looks like the 67 I bought, that turned into a parts truck. If you decide to junk that cab, I could use the little brace thing that goes inside the dogleg, where the lower fender bolt goes throgh on the driver side, its shown in you pics, for some reason, mine is missing on the driver side.

Re: Door panels under carpet
Wow! My truck had expanding foam and cardboard in it, but nothing like that! I can't believe how hardcore that rusted. I assume that you are going to just use the whole thing for various parts? Welding that back together would be a horrible experience I would think.

Re: Door panels under carpet
It was more than salt that caused that kind of rust. If the truck was run thru a field that had recently rec'd some type of fertilizer (a distinct possibility if the truck was used for farming) and threw some of it up underneath, that fertilizer is way more caustic than road salt and will eat that metal up at about 20 times the rate of salt. Dang, that is something to see.
Assuming you are gonna scrap it, be sure to cut that low hump out, it sure might be useful to someone.

Re: Door panels under carpet
We need to start a thread that shows all of the crappy repairs done by previous owners. I think I have some pics somewhere... Here's the ever popular "slide the new rocker panel over the top of the old rusted one" repair method favored by buy'em, bondo'em and bend'em-over restorist...
Why go through so much effort to do it wrong? Rg

What is even worse than the salt now is the brine many citys are using. Salt water with calcium added that they spray on the streets before the snow. This stuff actually gets up under rivits and bolt heads where it can't be washed out and starts eating the metal. And if that isn't bad enough, this stuff will pull the moisture out of the air and continue to do damage. With normal road salt once the panel is dry, the salt stops damaging the metal, but the brine will continue to corrode everything by absorbing the humidity from the air....even air as dry as 40% humidity will be enough moisture for the brine to continue working. This is really bad stuff, and if you are in an area that uses it, your vehicles are not safe onless locked up in a garage. Being in the driveway or even back yard isn't good enough anymore. |
