2wd carpet vs. 4wd...hump height.
Okay....here's the deal. Should have the title issue worked out by years end on my 79 2wd k5. Since the body is rusty its getting scraped once i have the title. Thursday i inadvertantly walked into a deal on a 89 Jimmy for $200. Have to jump the starter but is runs and has a clear title. I'll use the motor and tub for the 79 2wd K5 project and the trans and tcase for the chalet to improve mileage and 4lo ratio. So i figure the difference between the cab floors is the trans tunnel hump. So i will save the cover from the 79 2wd tub and install it on the 89 4wd tub. But i'm thinking it can't be that easy so i need to know what the difference is since ihave never owned a 2wd i have no clue except the covers are different and before you order a carpet kit they ask 2 or 4wd. Clue me in fella's.

Re: 2wd carpet vs. 4wd...hump height.
Most 2wd trucks have a low hump cab, less the trucks with an SM465, or 4x4, they have high humps. The height is significantly different inbetween the two, so there is no way the carpets would interchange between the two.
There is another problem you may run into, after 79, cab humps were no longer removeable. GM simply spot welded them into the floor, so, you won't be able to simply trade the humps between the 89 and the 79. You'll just need to head to the junkyard to get a new high hump that'll bolt into the 79.

Re: 2wd carpet vs. 4wd...hump height.
Doug,
I have never known of a K5 to have anything but a high hump. I am guessing you are assuming it is different based on the pickup carpet kit selection? All the carpet kits I have for K5's don't ask about the humps, that only applies to pickups. My 1978 2WD Jimmy has a high hump and I put the carpet from a 90 in it (being 4x4). Here is a pic of my 78 with the carpet removed.

Re: 2wd carpet vs. 4wd...hump height.
Seem to remember removing a hump cover from a 88 K5 i had in the backyard.
Should i assume a hump cover from a 2wd pickup would fit....since the K5 hump has xfer case lever holes...was thinkin i could use the 79's cover for the 89... K5 carpets are universal...save the split from 73-80 to 81-91. or actually that should be 73-77...and 78 to 91. DW

Re: 2wd carpet vs. 4wd...hump height.
I would say you are correct on your assumption. I don't have a 4x4 with me, but as you can see in the pic, my cover unbolts also.
Correct for the carpet. 73-77 and 78-91.

Re: 2wd carpet vs. 4wd...hump height.
I put an 86 2wd cab on my truck, and used the hump from the 77 cab that I scraped. The hump in the 86 was not unboltable like the 77 was, so I just took a saw and cut it out a bit small then the high hump, then put the high hump in place, drilled the holes and bolted it back down. If you have to switch humps, that would be the easier way to do it. Good luck with your project.
