Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

It's coming near time for me to start ripping my truck apart and fixing everything. I have a bent up stock 72 white bumper on the front, and the rear step bumper got destroyed in an accident, so theres nothing there. I would like to do a chrome sport front and rear bumper, but was wondering how good the chrome is that come on em. The truck will be a daily driver, all 4 seasons, and sits outside. It won't get driven a lot in the winter, but it will occassionally none the less. I live in a small town, so no salt unless I go on the highway. Has anyone who ever bought a pair noticed any premature pitting or peeling? I will go painted if I have to, but the chrome sure would set the truck off. Thanks!

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

i have repro chrome bumpers front and back been on the truck about 2 years before i got it i went out the other day with some chrome cleaner and cleaned them they looked like brand new no chips or nothing shine will blind you. this fit really well on the truck as far as i can tell doesn't look like he had to do any bending or anything when he installed them

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

Mine is in a humid climate, but in side as much as outside. Mine seem just fine to me. They don't seem any worse than normal bumpers. I'm originally from western PA and I know that up there it can be hard on anything. One way if your worried about the chrome is look for someone who has a nice painted one that switched to chrome for looks. Yours would be staright then at least. But my $.02 is they will hold up as well as anything else.

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

I don't think they are as heavy as thre original ones, but unless you get tapped a bit that shouldn't matter. As for the rust issue, if you are planning to use it through our crappy Sask winters I would coat the inside of the bumper with some type of clear coat like POR or Eastwood, just to help keep the salt off it.

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

I got the set for the '71 from JC Whitney so they are cheap, and they still look fine after 4 years in WA rain. Only thing I wish I would have done now, is coat them with a clear coat, and coat the backs with POR or something like that. Jeff.

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

My truck sits outside every day of the year and gets minimal cleaning at best. I bought a rechrome front bumper from Golden State Pickup Parts (are they still in business?) in 1992. It was guaranteed for life, and the chrome still looks great.

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

Thanks for the help guys! I think I'll give the chrome ones a try. I guess if they were complete garbage, lots of vendors wouldn't sell em. Hopefully they hold up, as chrome will look way better for my combination.

The tri plus bumpers have a 5 year warranty. They are thiner. Be carefull when torqn them down that you dont dimple them into the bracket. Have some one watching.

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

I bought mine from LMC about 7 years ago. They look like crap now, but in LMC's defense, due to my truck being in primer for like 9 years the truck was only washed about once a year and it sat outside for about 5 Southwest NY winters.

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

I personally like the re-chromed bumpers versus' aftermarket , but they are more expensive. I paid $350.00 a piece , but they have a nice deep chrome look to them .... Joe

Re: Repro Chrome Bumper Quality?

junkyarddog1956, Where did you have it re-chromed at?? I'm looking for someone to refinish mine and 350.00 doesn't sound too bad. AP
