Question 700R4 from 4x4 into 2WD? I have some questions!!!!!!!!

Ok I just found a guy selling a 700R4 from an 88 Suburban 4X4 for a good deal. I know these have a transfer case so does anyone know if I can make this work in my 74 2WD? I know I'd have to pull of the transfer case off but then whatr? I want to do the swap eventually and thought this might be the time to pick up the tranny but I just thought I'd post here before I buy it. I searched for 700R4 stuff on here but didn't find anything about this....Help???

You will have to pull it completely apart and get a 2WD tailhousing and ouput shaft and put it back together. More trouble than it is worth in my opinion. How good a deal is it?

Provided it's original to the truck, it's a later model 700R4...which is good. They're considered more reliable. It may be worth it if you have the ability to make it a 2WD transmission without too much expense.

Also you may have to get a different driveshaft to fit the tranny's new length w/o the trasnfer case.

Sounds like too much of a pain to me? The guy want's $350 for it but considering I'd have to buy other part's forget it, I'll find one that's ready to bolt up. Thanks for the info.... by chance what do you think the parts would cost to do that?

If you have a 700R4 in the 2WD truck you can just bolt one right in place. If not you need a new driveshaft, and I believe the mount on the crossmember is different.

For the sake of argument, what would stop a person from mounting a 4x4 tranny/transfer case in a 2wd truck and just never mounting anything to the front?
I understand there might be some clearence issues from the ground but if you needed a tranny and you had a stock height truck, couldn't you just mount the crossmember and transfer case?
I had the chance to buy a 1ton flatbed a while back with a bad tranny but missed it. At the time I had a T400/208(?) transfer case and wondered why I couldn't do just that and have essentially a 2 speed gearbox.

Good idea but I think that you would have trouble with the front d/s. I'm not sure but I think you would have trouble in sealing up the front seal without a d/s there. They may hook up different that on the rear d/s. But if it would work then would be a good idea.

On my '86 Diesel I never had a front DS from the day I bought it.
This was a 700/208 so it might be different for the heavier transfer cases.

$350 is pretty steep for the trans in my opinion, especially if it has never been rebuilt. Maybe a 4x4 one is more money for some reason?
I think you could probably get a 700r4 at a junkyard with at least a 60 day exchange for no more than $200.

If you currently have a 350 trans with a 9" tailshaft, the driveshaft legnth should be fine.
