My son wants to shave the handles and locks on his 84 Silverado. Let's here some pros and cons. Lookin at the Autoloc setup with the cable backup.

The pros...
Looks
Coolness factor
Eliminates popping the lock cylinder out to steal it.
easier to polish around since there is no handle hehe.
People cant just come up to your ride and hop in
In all...not a LOT of benefit..just a choice really But I loved it.

CONS:
If a solenoid fails..you better have a remote with dual door popping capability then you can get in on the other side.
If your battery fails...your assed out....not getting in unless you have a hood pop latch remotely located to get to the battery since you cant open the hood from the inside when its locked and closed up.

Ask me how i know this haha I used to leave my wing window unlocked just for this reason..with dark tint..its not noticeable.
If you lose your remote...better have an emergency backup button hidden...Opens you up to thieves...as anyone that has a brain knows a car with shaved handles has to have some backup plan to get in.

Windows still break...so the protection from theft doesent really hold up well haha. If they want it...they will have it...Again...ask me how I know.

I had my truck for over 5 years and never had a solenoid fail. I loved them and it was a cool thing for people to ask about. I could also smooth my inner door panels due to this and I relocated my buttons for 'noids and the windows to a custom center console.

LOHRTBT has given you some good answers. I will offer a suggestion to help in the fail safe department.

If you run a protected hot wire that is hidden but accessable from the exterior the solenoid can be activated by using a battery from your cordless driver (DeWalt, Makita, B&D, etc). Ground one side and touch the wire to the other side of the driver battery and it will pop the door.

I suggest you do this for both doors in case one goes bad. In most cases they won't both go bad at the same time. Make sure the wires are not on the fused side, or a blown fuse will render this useless.

I have other "fail safe" ideas that I can share if you want to PM me....

my buddy shaved his doors on his s-10 and benz and the way he opened them was usin a magnet unno how it worked but its alot better than a remote in my opinion

FIne..no nekkid pics ....my toes might be in some of them and I dont want the horror of the cranktoe to haunt you in your sleep heheeeheh!!
When I get the bike back from paint ...I will have her pose for a few pics on it and if your nice I will share.

One other thing..you could run an emergency pull wire for the hood latch like I did...and then have a chain tied to the pull cable for the door pin and have it hidden in the engine bay through the firewall for a manual pull if the noid' fails.

Like Ken said..the battery will work...I never shared that till now since it helps thieves figure out how to get in...and there are other little ways of doing it

But since my good truck is gone....my secrets can be revealed lol
