Widest tire on rim??

What is the widest tire you can put on a 7" ralley, I would like to run a 275/60 in the back and either a 235 or 255/60 in the front. I have the 235's on my 69 and they almost look too short, is anybody using the 255's????

Re: Widest tire on rim??

I wouldn't go that large on a 7" rim, I would say 255 would be the max on a 7" rim.

Re: Widest tire on rim??

The 90 ,91 ,92 ,and 93(?) 454 SS trucks came from the factory with chrome sport wheels that were 7 inches wide . The were factory equipped with BF Goodrich Comp TA 275/60/15's . They were a little wide for the wheel but looked pretty good . You could look one of those trucks up on the web for a reference . Always wanted one of those trucks . I will probably be in the market for one in a year or so but will definitely get a 91 or newer for the OD trans . Frank

Yeah they were a dog . I had a friend with one and a stock GMC Sierra SS with a 350 put it on him . His was a 90 model with the 3.73's and a th400 . I think they wer rated at around 255 horses . A vortec 350 makes that . But the torque.... Frank

Here is an ad for a factory set of the 454ss 15x7 wheels on the www.454ss.com website . There are also some good pics of the trucks with the factory tire/wheel combo to look at . Just follow the link , then go to their home page to see some nice SS trucks . Captkaos , the only 15x8 wheel Chevrolet ever produced (that I know of ) would be the truck rally for the 70's through 87 trucks , Blazers , suburbans went a little longer , 4 Wheel drive rallys and Corvette Rallys . The Trans Am in the late 70's had a 15x8 wheel available also but it was aluminum and brings GOOD money right now . Unfortunately GM should have used a 15x8 wheel for the SS trucks and they would have looked a little more stocky . Frank

Re: Widest tire on rim??

Well, I have 255/70 on my 15x8 and they look pretty meaty... i don't know if they would look right on a 15x7, they would bulge a bit much i think? They would fit, but that just seems like a lot of meat on a 7 inch rim. Outta curiosity why not a 15x8 rim? But lookwise its a matter of opinion.

On the 255 width tire alone, I gotta say its a big improvement over the 235. They squealed on alotta average turns. Granted they were gettin up in age, but even riding with daddy when he had a new set of 235/75 they were too much like they belonged on a car. Hell, going from the factory wheel (15x6? 15x7?) to the 15x8 alluminum, the overall weight of my wheels actually went down.

Re: Widest tire on rim??

i dont know about the metric stuff, but i have always been told that the tire should be within 4" of the wheel width.

Re: Widest tire on rim??

I have 255 60's on a 6" or 7" van rally up front and a 275 60 out back on 8" truck rallys.

The truck was up in the air because the tranny Blew up.

Re: Widest tire on rim??

Well it was like riding a really bumpy roller coaster a huge cloud of smoke combined with flying parts hittig the underside of the cab floor and scarrteing all over the 05 stang that was behind me Chipping and gouging the hood and front bumper. I shifted around 3500-4000 Max. The sun gear or sun shell broke. I had already contacted the tranny shop about the problem and they did not really care he siad it was just dirt causing the odd 2-3rd miss shift.
