stock steel wheel guys....
i posted a wtb wheels but got no responses so maybe im asking for the wrong thing. i want to put stock style plain steel 6 lug rims on my 4x4. i want to be able to put dog dish caps on them...was thinking i would like 15's but after looking at lots of stock truck pics it looks like 16 is the way to go. what all can i find these wheels on? i need 6 lug and would like 7.5 to 8 inch width. also did chevy ever make a chrome dog dish cap? i dont care if its correct year. any help on what trucks and years would be great...thanks

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
I have a stock 15" 6 lug wheel you could have, but we're kinda far away from each other. I think it's 7" wide but I'm not sure, it has an almost new tire mounted on it so I can't get a measurement. The 16" six lug wheels were an option, I think they were either 16x5 or 16x6. And you could get either painted or chrome hubcaps on the 69-72 trucks.

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
thanks for the info robert. whatever size i end up getting im gonna need five of em. as far as being stock or not that makes no difference to me. if a 2006 chevy truck had a 6 lug 16 in wheels with a shiny dog dish hubcabs i would take a set of those. im running 15 x 8 rallies right now with 15 33 12.5's. ive wanted to go stock steel look for quite awhile.

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
Mark, Check with Frank (PICKMUP) in Olympia. He had some great looking stock 15-inch x 8-in. 6-lug rims that will take the hub caps.
I long for the day when we could have them welded up with the proper center for nothing! Now you have to go to CA for that service and the cost is about the same as a new set of Torque Thrust II's...YIKES! Next stop....Monroe Swap Meet or some old tire shops that have piles of wheels for $10/each.

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
FYI...
I don't know how many people know it but a "drum" stock steel wheel will NOT fit on your 1971+ front axel. I ran into this with both my 71/72 chevelles and my 1971 4x4 truck. In high school, circa 1985, my buddy had a flat on his 1974 Malibu. My 1972 Malibu was in the parking lot with a fully functional spare in the trunk. Since the bud lived a block or two away from the school I borrowed him my spare. His flat was a front tire. Well the "drum" set of stock wheels did NOT work with his front disc brake caliper. Fast forward to today. I wanted stock 6-lug rims to paint and put on my truck. A friend assured me that he had 3 of them that I could have. Sure enough NONE of them spun on the front axel. Just last week another bud gave me 4 stock 6-lug wheels off of a 1976 4x4 he just cut up for scrap. BEFORE I pay to paint them then mount and balance them I'll see if they "spin" on my front axel over my disc brake calipers. For what its worth, all 71-87 stock steel wheels SHOULD work with ALL 6-lug 67-72 trucks. However after all the issues I've seen I'd make sure they work on your truck before you spend any money on them.

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
The bolt pattern is the same, but the center hole is too small on the new wheel.
Plus, the offset is all wrong on them too, they'll be tucked in too much, and rubbing may be an issue with the wheels turned all the way. |

This is what your were looking for. 15x8 stock wheel that takes a factory chrome dog dish hub cap.

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
You`ll have to go with 15",as shown,if you want the wideer ones.GM offered wide 16.5s in 6-lug,but only narrow 16s.Until recently 16" rim diameter wheels and tires weren`t available in wider sizes. You can find 15" tires in a profile similar to a 16,like BFG 9.50/33x15s.The good news is these rims were used as recently as the mid-80s,mostly found on CUCV Blazers.

I picked them up last month. He even saved the lug nuts and hub caps. Same price! My theory is everybody threw them away for "mags" back in the day. Junk yards scrapped them because of the low demand. Now they are hard to find.

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
Those wheels really look good on a "no trim" truck...smooth! They give that clean "poverty" look when painted or powder coated and running the stock dog dish caps, but the 8" wide and deep dish makes a nice package for bigger tires.
IMO they do NOT look good with trim rings...might as well run ralleys. ...and I find them really hard to find===i.e. rare! |

Do they make 18" or 20" rally wheels for 72 trucks?

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
My shortbed cheyenne may be a little "trimmed up" but I love the looks of the plain caps with the deeper drums (15"). Watch e-bay. the first time I did a search for the dang things, I found em for $80.00 sandblasted and ready to go.

I'm running 33" x 9.00 Bridgestones on 15" x 6" factory 6 hole wheels, I like the look of rallies but wanted something more stock looking for this truck.

i remember your truck from the stock 4x4 pics thread. very nice looking. when you say 15 x 6 factory are you saying year specific to our trucks or are those later model wheels?

Re: stock steel wheel guys....
These wheels came from a 84 GMC 4X4, I think the same wheels were used from the 70s to about 1987 on 1/2 ton 4x4s

How could we forget that truck?Rarely do we see the painted bumper guards. And,rarely do we see this style in the original position.
