0 oil pressure??
ok this seemed to start last night, truck wasnt running all that well.. when it was in park it ran fine, about 30psi (no numbers just lines, ) oil pressure.. as soon as i would put it in drive oil pressure would drop to 0-15psi, when i was driving it would go back up to 15-30psi, but when i would come to a stop it would drop to almost 0 again. Also when i would come to a stop, RPMs would drop and truck would try to die. I limped it home...
Today i had to take my wife to work and daughter to school.. starts up and runs fine, oil pressure seems a bit higher, still dropped to about 0 when i put it in gear.. truck ran fine all day (drove it around town for about 4hrs) didnt try to die, idled fine in gear... later in the morning the Psi quit dropping, but didnt get much more than 20-30psi. It has always run between 30-60.. depending if i was idling or doing 45+... now it wont get about 30psi.. any ideas? what is considered normal? does she need to be put out to pasture?

Re: 0 oil pressure??
I take it you have checked the oil level. If it is overfull you could be getting gas in the oil & diluting it or a-freeze. If the oil looks OK you probably have a plugged up oil screen. If you don,t fix it real soon it will put itself out to pasture.

Re: 0 oil pressure??
Mechanical or electric sending unit? I'd double check with another mechanical guage either way.

Re: 0 oil pressure??
ok well.. spent ALL day today working on it.. wife went to town to take kiddo to school and i started tearing into it.. luckily she was able to pick up some parts for me.. I found a few vac lines and replaced or plugged them.. I took the carb off and cleaned it. I checked a couple plugs i thought might not be firing well.. I pulled the cap and rotor and decided it needed to be replaced, i also added the mechanical pressure guage.. While i was waiting on the wife to get home with some parts i made a switch panel but didnt get around to finish it.. SOOOOO...... its fixed.. atleast it appears to be at the moment. Doesnt die now, run smoother and the oil pressure is at 20psi at idle and stops, up to 40psi when i am on it, and 60psi when engine is cold... does that sound about right? i also rewired a few things, apparently wasnt a good idea.. my tach now turns off when i turn the headlights on.. will work on that this weekend maybe.. i also fixed my stereo, which wasnt saving the presets.. all in all it was an eventful day, but i am sure worn out..

Re: 0 oil pressure??
Your oil pressure sounds fine now, 20 psi at idle is fine, 40 when driving is normal and I get about 60 when cold also.
I run 10w-30 I believe and get close to the same numbers on my 350.

Re: 0 oil pressure??
Sounds like everything has worked out for you on the oil pressure side. The oil pressure you mentioned sounds good. Good luck with the wiring issue. Hopefully it will be an easy fix.

Re: 0 oil pressure??
ok i figured out the fix for the tach, no biggie..
however my truck was dying again this morning.. after a few miles it cleared and didnt do it again.. thinking maybe in the tank? or maybe float stuck? i dont know.. when its not dying it runs much better.. |

Re: 0 oil pressure??
Does it smoke any when it is in the stages of acting up? Or does it just kinda loose power?
Maybe a weak fuel pump, filter sock in the gas tank?

Re: 0 oil pressure??
Definately sounds like a fuel delivery issue. I'm thinking start at the carb and work your way back. Check the floats, filter, pump then finally the tank. I'm thinking more towards a bad float or float setting.

Re: 0 oil pressure??
filter by carb is good, that was my first thought when truck was acting up, so its good.. i did pull off carb and clean it up, but didnt disassemble it at all..
as far as smoking i havent been able to tell, my pipes dump underneath and it has either been dark, or i have been alone and usually just trying to keep the thing running.. you thinking it might be flooding it? or what? I was also thinking filter sock in tank maybe some sediment or something... |
