Transmission? for a 68 chevy truck...
Recently I have noticed that my transmission is going out on me and planning on buying one through Summit, but I have a question about something before I order it so I don't get myself in the position to have to return it. Currently, I have a stock turbo 350 trans and just wanted to know what it is the length of the tailshaft so I can order the correct size tranny, because I want to avoid having custom work done to fit it. Thanks!

measure the tailshaft of the tranny. It will either be a 6" or 9" tailshaft.

Re: Transmission? for a 68 chevy truck...
To tell you the truth I don't know where to begin and end the measuring for the tailshaft because I am not too familiar with transmission. What is the common lenght of tailshafts for the 68 chevy, or any ideas on how to measure it. Thanks!

Measure from the seal where the drive shaft inserts into the trani. From there measure to where the tail shaft housing bolts to the transmission housing. Will either be 9" lomg or 6" short.

I actually have one more questions how can you tell the difference between a turbo 400 between a turbo 350 tranny. Thanks!

get out your US map. TH400's pan looks like the state of Illinois. TH350's are pretty much square with one corner clipped.
As far as the TH350 tail lengths are concerned. Chevy produce 3 lenghts. Standard on trucks are the short 6". The other lengths are 9" and 12".

Re: Transmission? for a 68 chevy truck...
Your truck shouldn't have a Th350... not if it is original... or original-ish. The TH350 wasn't untill 69. As original, your ride would have either the TH400, or the Powerglide 2 speed.
Quick way to ID a 350 from a 400 is to look for the kick down. if there is an electric switch on your carb that is activated when you get close to WOT, then it's a 400, if there is a cable kickdown hooked to the throttle, then you have a 350. |

What I would do is get an overdrive tranny like a 700r4 or even a 6L80E.

Re: Transmission? for a 68 chevy truck...
Hey, good link!
Anyone know the length of a stock 3speed manual? I thought it was the same as the Turbo350 but I might be wrong....
