how to neutralize salt

I just got another blazer. And i think it took a bath in the ocean. There is sand and white salt residue everywhere. I ripped out the soggy carpet and started using sopey water to clean everything. ..Is there some thing that neutralize's salt that i can use down it the cracks and rockers?
Looks like i also need to change all the fluids.

Re: how to neutralize salt

Randy....great to see you back on here man!
A real good washing should do OK, but a good scrubbing with a stiff hand brush on the back sides of the panels and underneath wouldn't be a bad idea... a power washer or even steam cleaner would the awsome, but 10 bucks at the coin op car wash would suffice.

Now you KNOW we need pics man.

Re: how to neutralize salt

I think Randy is refering to gobs of rust all over the blazer, like it came from here or Detroit.
At least, that's what I thought anyways.

Re: how to neutralize salt

Hey Andy... .Its not a hurracaine truck. I think the thing was a surf fishing truck or towed boats and drove in the water or something like that. The sill plates were all krusty with white salt and the bottoms of the seat brackets were too. I ripped out all the carpet and the floor had been fixed at one time, but is rusting out again. So i washed and scrubed everything with soapy water and hozed it out and it comes back....? I hate to think what the inside of my rockers look like. I need a salt neutralizer.

Re: how to neutralize salt

Sounds like a real project to me. Got to take it down to bare metal and then fix all the cancer from there. Sounds like dipping for paint and rust removal is getting real popular. Check that out. It strips the truck down rust and all from what I hear. Then the holes can be patched, body anodised, primed and painted.

Re: how to neutralize salt

Unless you separate all the panels and clean and recoat them, dipping is the only way I know of that has a chance of killing it. Anything strong enuff to clean up the effects of the salt, will most likely take the paint with it.

I would definitelly redo it with POR-15 or Eastwood Encaspulator or Rustmore to stifle any return.

Re: how to neutralize salt

ALMOST impossible. I sold my truck that a friend gave a salt water bath launching and recovering his boat (I only discovered the results later). You will have to dip the body in a chemical solution to remove all traces of salt before you coat it with anything. Dried salt has such an affinity for moisture that it will attact moisture in the air through paint. Here is a link for more info on salt corrosion.

Re: how to neutralize salt

Thanks guys.....not what i want to hear. No wonder the thing was so cheap. I'm gonna paint brush the floor and hope for the best. When the rockers woulnt pass inspection any more, ill replace them and that will take care of part of the problem. Eventually i'll replace everthing......hmmm.....mabey i'll just sell it. I'm undecided.

Re: how to neutralize salt

Acutally your approach is probably not a bad idea. If it runs well just high pressure wash, clean it as best as you can, shake a spray it, drive it and enjoy it. Wait for the bad rust to show up and just replace that sheet metal as needed. You might find a Blazer with great sheet metal with a blown engine and running gear that you could switch all of your components to later on.
