Lost Interest in project

Lately I have been working some crazy hours and I am not doing anything except my usual routines and checking into this site. What do you all do to get out of a slump with your rides. Cause I just can't get motivated.

I look back at old photos of where it used to be in a pasture before the ZZ4 swap. Then I think about where it's at now. Much better off and improved. Then I dream about what I want/need next for it to be complete.

If that doesn't work I just think about how much the ex-wife hated the truck and wanted to sell it off. Then I think "She got the new truck payment and I got my truck." Then I keep on wrenching away all while dreaming of having it like the "Fall Guy" truck one day but a different scheme.

Go and laugh with friends. Get your spirits up. Take your rig for a ride and think about how you can make it better. Come here for advice and hammer at it. Take advantage of the nice days.

I spent 11 months away from my home working once. The whole time I missed out on tinkering with my trucks. I don't have to travel as much now, so I am all for making good use of my time and spending wisely so I don't go broke and need to work so much. Seems to work for me.

But, take time out for yourself. Gotta do.

I wish I could tell ya. I havent even opened the door on mine in a month. Its just sitting there outside while the rust continues to kill it.

I just dont have a good place to work on it, and the entire floor of the cab needs replacing. I want to start, but I need a garage, and everything else to go with it. Sometimes I just want to start on one in better shape, but that truck is all I have from my Dad and he tought me most of what I know about cars on it. So I suppose one day I'll get going on it, but who knows when.....


Heck it sat with a blown motor for two years. I did a month long thrash in july 04 to get it running again and I bet I havent put 5k on it since. Seems like everytime I get in it something tears up. The back brakes still dont work hardly at all from when I had to replace the gears and removed the axle. That kinda stuff just gets me discouraged.

know the feeling, i have a 68 camaro that has been on the back burner for almost a year now, it was a total frame up and is about 70% finished, just put it back in the working part of the shop this week to finish up. dont give up

I think these things just ebb and flow...and sometimes the ebb is longer than expected

I just let it sit until I am ready to do something on it again. In the meantime, I find something else I enjoy doing better than working on my truck. I come back to it, but along the way had some diversity...maybe as way to recharge my creative batteries.

I found it worst when I beat hell out of myself during the phase of not wanting to work on it. I "should" have wanted to work on it...like that approach was going to make it fun [NOT].

Give yourself some down time or other things to do. The truck will be there whenever you're next ready.

Do research! Since there aren't to many car show sgoing on get on the net and look for information about what you want to do. Set up a spread sheet and break down the major areas that need attention. Compile a list of vendors and costs.

If you break it down it to lots of small jobs then you can quit looking at a mountain of work. It's a lot easier to get motivated to work on something when you feel like your effort will have rewards....

Take a break. Find a different hobby and concentrate on that for a while. Don't guilt yourself into working on the vehicle or you'll never enjoy it. I wound up taking nearly 2 years off from working on my Camaro, and then all of a sudden a couple months ago, my strong motivation to work on it came right back, and now I'm as excited about it as I think I ever have.

Dude, I resemble that remark

I go out and get SOMETHING done - even if it's really small. For a while I would just get out in the garage and sandblast one small part, etch it, dry it and set it aside for paint...but it was SOMETHING DONE and that made me feel that I was making progress.

The thing for me is sometimes I get caught up in all the stuff that needs to be done and the stuff I can't do either because of time or money. The "big picture" is just too depressing :/ Getting some piece DONE helps me over that rough spot.

There's a quote in one of the Hitchiker books something along the lines of "the one thing you absolutely cannot afford to have is a sense of perspective".

It doesnt hurt to walk away for a while. Sometimes it even helps the overall outcome. If you can hang onto it, just wait it out. If you are like me, the hours will change & so will your mood...corn

Not bad to walk away from it for a time. I t sometimes give you time to develope a fresher idea of what you want it to be when it's done.
I always found that buying new things for it puts me in the mood to work on it again. I'm just too curious and want to find out how that new item will make it look or perform.

write up a description on how you want the truck to eventually look- i make a bunch of lists with prices,parts,stuff i want to clean up,etc...-every once in a while when i'm near the parts shop i'll pick up some small items,stuff i need eventually-scratch it off my list-maybe paint it up in the basement or something-do some research on it-i also don't have a garage and find myself working with the weather-but i end up doing most of it inside anyway and just bring it out for the install-that way it doesn't look like a big job or get expensive-if it was the ole mans truck it's worth putting some effort into it-you'd be suprised on how ya feel when even something small is done-don't give up

My project has been stored away for about 2 years. That has been helpful to have it out of sight, but everytime a new Summit catalog shows up I can't help but make lists of what I want. I guess right now I am content to let it sit in its current stage. I currently have other goals I am pursuing. If you really want to forget about your projects do what I did...start a Master's Degree!
