is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

I have spent over $300 for rubber and countless hours not to mention gallons of silicone and my rig still leaks like a roaring river.

Has anybody ever got 1 not to leak, or is it part of blazer ownership.

My '73 leaked real bad too if i remember correctly.

IIRC, GM never made them H2O tight from the factory, so I would say the answer is NO

Re: is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

When I first got my blazer back in 81 it was only 10 yrs old but it was tight as a drum for several years. But numerious times of taking the top off the door caps split and the drip caps got broke. then it leaked like a cive. I haven't put new door caps on it yet. Project in the works. I did put the drip caps on it. Helped some. My originals are much smaller than the repos I bought. I have saved them. They fit much tighter and don't stick out as far. I am going to try and shave the repos down. I owned three different 71/72 blazers in the early to mid 80's and none of them leaked. We are doing something wrong or something isn't as good as the original. Haven't figured it out yet.

Re: is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

You'll probably never completely seal it up & every time you take the top off, you'll have to start over

Soft tops often leak less than the hard top...

It needs to rain hard for my soft top to leak.I've never had a hard top.

My interior is an H20 collector. On frosty mornings I have to scrap outside and inside of windows. All new weather stripping, caulking, etc.

Oh yeah, even if you do get it sealed up tight, you'll get condensation on the inside of the top on the cold mornings and it will drip on your head!

Same here.......when it dips below freezing my kids ***** the whole way to daycare because it drips from the roof rather than just a rainy day leaking through the upper door/top seals.

Another quote that i found interesting is i had no idea the soft tops could keep water out.

All the people I've ever talked to that owned a blazer/jimmy when they were new said they leaked from day one.

You say you disagree, why? (curious)

Re: is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

wait, Actually, I had a 90 full size that never leaked from the day it was new. Only owned it 2 years though and never popped off the top, which was a 1/2 top on those. I would like a 73-74 that the complete top came off. that would be sweet. They dont seem to be as rare as the 69-72's and are usually not as rusty for some reason.

Re: is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

What leaks???

Mine hasn't leaked since the day I bought it and parked it in my garage!

I seem to remember reading a while back that during the day when these trucks were new and they were parked waiting to be delivered to the dealers, that during big snow storms they would have snow on the dashboards. Goes to show that they were never "water tight" to start with.

I read somewhere that they took the word "Gullible" Out of the dictionary.
Goes to show that the word gullible is no longer in the dictionary.

Re: is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

I fined the snow hard to believe. Mine which now leaks has never had snow of the window. next time I see an original owner selling a rig on ebay I will ask them. Like I said I had 3 of them that were in the age range of 10+ years and they never leaked until I started taking the tops off of them. I kept my first blazer for 5yrs before I ever took the top off. My father had a new 72 blazer that we took camping for years. I ask him-- he said it never leaked. Because if it did he would have gotten rid of it. I also find it hard to believe that GM would design a truck with the dash like it is that wasn't made to be waterproof. Its not like the jeep full metal straight up and down dash that was for the most part waterproof

When it rains hard I get some coming in at the back of the doors were the window meets the top.

Re: is there such thing as a water tight blazer?

wow..... i really started somthing here...... from they leaked before they were even sold to they never leak until the top is removed.

I live in oregon and its been snowing the last couple of days and its leaking worse than when it rains. I 've go runnning water built into my blazer I just need to finish the plumbing so it can get out.

Maybe it's more of a luck thing. some leak and some dont. I just know this summer my top is coming off and when i put it back on in the fall, if it doesn't leak it wont come off again.

The removable top is one of the best things about a Blazer. I'd trade leaks in the winter for wind in my hair in the summer any time.
