TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
This Month's theme is THE BEASTS
Now here are the rules or criteria for the vehicles To be an eligible BEAST • Open to all trucks, burbs, Blazers, Jimmys, and whatever other names the SUVs use. The years can be 19-whatever to 20-whatever. • It must be road worthy and currently legal (or close to it) to be on the road. • It must have at least three imperfections. This includes things like different color paints (or lack of paint), dents, holes (large and small) or whatever might make someone afraid to go near it for fear of catching some sort of disease . • We won’t call them ugly, because we know it is just our baby’s character. To Nominate: You or someone else may nominate your truck in this thread. We need a picture of the nominee vehicle, the owner’s board name, and the basics specs of the truck (year, engine/drive train specs). You or your nominator can provide additional info if desired. We’ll accept nominees for 2 weeks. Boss or I will then PM the first 8 nominees to get any data and pictures if they haven’t already been provided that hadn’t been already provided. An e-mail address will be provided to send pictures in case the nominee has problems resizing them for the board. We will then put together a Poll Thread and announce it on the General Discussion Board for the voting. Let's go guys and gals. Get the Beasts in here

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Do I really need a description? A picture is worth a thousand words and the words I usually hear are "Dang that thangs a BEAST"! 1968 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 283 4 speed 4.56 gears 6" lift 36" tires some rust but it just adds character.....NO power steering or Brakes - manual locking hubs - the front porch is made outta 1/2 plate (sticks out 13 inches) with an old power wagon winch, while out back is a 6" channel iron rear bumper with 6" clevises and my tow hook is from a 55 ton crane, its my "anti tailgater" deterent (sticks out 27 inches) and makes a handy counterweight (175 lbs) for when i stand on the front bumper to check the oil.....

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
I'll play.
I nominate my longhorn. 1970 one ton Longhorn... one of 1404 built. Originally powered by a 350/TH350 ( ) .. now powered by a Caddy 500 and a Pontiac TH350, eaton rear with 4.10 gears. While not the eye sore it was a few years ago... in no less than 7 colors... As of right now it is down to 3 colors.. the original gold and white...and primer gray. I'll get some more incriminating pics later. |

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
mines definately a beast. its a 79 chevy half ton 4x4. The entine is a rebuilt 350 bored .060 and done up a little, transmission is a th350 with TCI guts in it, the transfer case is a np205 out of a 70 blazer, the front axle is a dana 44 the rear is a 14 bolt ff 4.56 gears the axles came out of a 3/4 ton 77. the tires are 36.5x14.5x15 and it has no lift, i used a sawzall and trimmed the rust to make them fit. It is all one color rattle can black primer. Its mostly dents and rust. the only body mods ive done are put on a tailgate and grill from a 73 gmc.

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
It will be tough to compete against you guys but here goes: 1971 C10, smoking 307, Th350, 3.07 rear. Was originally special order lime green, now pukey tan and brown paint on what little metal there is left. Steers and stops quite well actually but the carb is messed up and it needs an HEI. Other options are a shattered back window, no exhaust, many dangling wires, leaking ps hose, wooden steering wheel, and a funky smell inside (most likely mice). I bought it off a "friend" who was too scared to let his kid drive it, so of course I had to buy it and dump it at my brother's acerage to hibernate.

I nominate the POS! Its a 1972 K10 with transplanted 3/4 axles, 350 4 speed, plenty on rust and leaks for every year shes been around! Plywood bed cause the original wood bed is rotted through. Only drove on warm days (heater works but not good enough to over come the custom in floor vents that came with age)

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Here is mine,
It has taken a lot of time and money but she has come a long way over the last year. All this work has been done by myself and the help of a friend who worked for chev parts we are going to be putting in his jeep pickup. We did this work in my apartment garage. Not sure what the landlord would say if he knew lol. Unfortanatly she still very much fits into the beast catagory. Lets see, as far as drivetrain she has the standard granny + 3speed. Engine is a rebuilt 350 four bolt with 2.02" double hump heads and a healthy cam. I swapped the front diff with one out of a 70 k10 because the 69 was a close kuckle setup and dana considers it obsolete and does not make parts for it any longer. With that I swapped the rear axle to have a matched set and was pleasently surprised to find out the rear was posi. 3.73 ratio. Interior was stripped and I completely redid it. Aslo added power brakes (soon to be disc) and power steering.

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Here's my multicolored truck. It needs new cab supports, rockers, a few dents fixed here and there, paint, body trim, new interior, and the A/C needs to be restored. I plan to do a frame-off restoration with my son when he gets a little older.
It has a 350 with a 700R4 out of an '88 van, and 3.73 posi gears. I also installed cruise control out of an early '80s Caprice. |

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Here's my truck, a 70 GMC (for the most part) The pics of it with toolboxes are the way I bought it. The pics with no rear fenders and in many colors is the way it is now. Great improvement! The one with the Q's is just a goofy pic I took when I drug a blzr home and realized the tires where too wide for the dolly, so I swapped the truck rear tires for the blazer fronts.
The cab has a few issues with rust, the bed has obvious problems, the a/c isn't working yet, but it's an almost daily driver and I work the snot out of it. I almost forgot to mention, since the theme is "The Beast" that my truck's vin is CE104SZ66622 No kidding.

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Here's one thats sure to draw attention from the voters, a true "beast" in a Frankensteinian sense. It's a satin black (not sure if it's Krylon or the Wal-mart equivalent) over the OE medium blue. The door has gray primer accents over OE Wheatland yellow. The patina you see on this rare specimen comes from years of dried on pine sap drippings from sitting in the woods. Not evident in the pics is a healthy dose of green mold on the lower bedsides giving it the "tropical rain forest" effect. Truely a multi-colored, multi-textural feast for the senses. A one-off, often imitated, never duplicated.
Note also the "rat-rod" red rims. This truck started that trend, as evidenced by the fact they are split rims with 30 year old weather-cracked radials. The coup-de-grace is the subtle use of broken (not sawed off) pressure treated deck railing in the stake pockets. I wanted something that would stand the rigors of New England, yet exude a rugged natural beauty. They've been carefully arranged to portray a Salvidor Dali-esque cognative dissonence. A little history: It started out as a low-mileage rust-free vehicle. An optioned out 72 Sierra Grande 3/4 ton 4x4. You know the kind, the one Gramps bought to go RV camping with and died a few years later, and from there it sat. I wanted to do something different so I "rustored" it. I sold or junked all the options and trim (buckets, tach dash, tilt, should belts, etc, etc), ripped off the clean sheetmetal ( I was surprised I didn't need a torch, but used one anyway ) , and proceeded to locate some "well-loved" pieces to replace them. Here it is, after years of work, a labor of love, a one-off rustification. Whadda ya'll think?

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Here's my beast. AKA Project Boarder Patrol K5. Started it's humble beginnings in my posession as a blown 350 tank with rotten sheetmetal and teeny 31" tires. Now it's grown up to 4" lift, 35" tires and the same old rotten sheetmetal with a couple of dents thrown in for good measure. It's all one color, but thats only because the scuff and spray white hasn't fallen off the factory green two tone yet!
As it sits now: Right side quarter cancer: (bondo's over 1/4" thick here!) left side is mudded up too. Check out the cracks: This is the "GOOD" rocker: The right side is almost all gone and sitting on my driveway! Here it is on the trail: Both bumpers are tweaked beyond repair. The front's held on with 3 bolts and the rear is bent into a smiley face shape by the Previous owner. It sure ain't pretty, but it's mechanically reliable as a swiss watch. I'll fix the bumpers with HD fabricated pieces, replace the rockers with sliders and cut the wheelwells for clearance on the 35's. (the tires were more than the cost of the truck!)

Ok here we go. My 68 short fleetside has a 350 with a small cam and mallory ignition, has a turbo 350 backing it up to a one piece drive shaft going to a 3.73 posi. The grill is out of the truck as well as the front bumper. It is about 3 colors with some of the original showing through te faded primer. Pic is in my avitar. I will post more pics here soon.

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
My "beast" is a 1967 4x4 that has been used like an iron ox for the past 39 years. Always a farm truck. It was ordered with front and rear posi, 283, 4spd. Dealer option cattle catcher grill gaurd. Running CO-OP thread-bare Mud tires. It has an indian blanket seatcover, and enough and manure to qualify in any beast competition. The bed it rusted through, and the paint has been naturally sandblasted by our fine Colorado silt. Here are some pics.

My '72 C/10, with no good body panels on it, and approximently 2 gallons of bondo. Runs awesome with a built 350 though. Not currently on the road because the liscence is expired.

Re: TOTM - Mar 06 - The Beasts
Here is our nominee! It is my beloved 1973 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 sporting a solid 350 straight from Shucks .
This truck was bought by my parents in the early 90's and is now mine. It has seen hundreds of trips to the mountains for snowmobile adventures and has endured tons of abuse by me. I actually intentionally put it nose first into an empty irrigation canal so I could turn around. Teenagers........ Here are some of the key points of interest: Note the large amounts of rust on every panel! What a treat! Our friends like to break pieces off and throw it at each other. Here is where and old guy slammed into the side of us with a plastic camaro. He lost. Note the great gas spills and 700 bucks worth of tires! And as a final note- the grey lines you see on the hood.... that is actually the original primer showing through because the paint is soooooooooo thin! You can see where the first coat of paint was laid! Enjoy our great truck known to us as the Big Red Machine......... |

THE BIG BEAST! This truck is only 19 feet long, stock drivetrain. Top speed of 42 mph! The woodstove and mattress are gone, but that doens't mean my wife hasn't threatened to send me out to live in it!
