Blazer vs. Jimmy

Hi. New to the board, but not to these trucks. Have fooled around with Chevrolet trucks, Blazers and Suburbans for 20 years or so.

That being said, I bought my first 1st gen Jimmy the other day, and I have a question: How popular do Jimmys seem to be in comparison to Blazers? (I performed a search, in case this is a common question, but I got no results) I've always had Blazers, and personally, I like the Chevy grille better. On the other hand, I rarely ever see any Jimmys, and that's sort of the reason I bought it.

I know this is a subjective question, but I'm just curious to see what others think....Are Jimmys more difficult to sell because they're less popular or are they AS popular because there seem to be fewer of them?

PLease advise.

Thanks.

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

ok, jmho but I think the grill thing kind of affects the likeability of the Jimmy. BUT, I think it is like anything, after awhile you get used to it and like it the way it is, and wouldn't want it any other way.

I'll put it this way, I was in the market to buy a new pickup, my wife hates the new silverado grill/headlights, I like them but the GMC looks better, and she liked the GMC so we got that instead. I think it is all personal preference....
AGAIN JMHO

I agree, it's all in what YOU like, but I would say that the Chevy is more attractive to most. Welcome from just down the road by the way. If you need any front end parts(grill, bumper, Rad support) for it, send me a private message. I have some nice stuff that I am about to sell.

Welcome to the board. I'm in the market for a Blazer right now, and would only buy the Jimmy if I couldn't find the Blazer I want. I guess I'm like most, it isn't a deal breaker, but still a matter of personal preference.

I think this comes closest to my position on the matter. To me the Jimmy, while not at all ugly, just looks more dated than the Blazer.

Bottom line: This is a really nice, straight, solid, rust-free truck, and I'm just trying to determine if it's going to be a wise move to put a lot of money in it to make it a really nice truck or would my money be better spent looking for what will certainly be a harder-to-find-in-equal-condition Blazer. In the end, will a REALLY nice Jimmy bring the kind of money / be as resaleable as a REALLY nice Blazer? That's my main question.

In short, I don't think so. It comes down to the difference between "rare" and "rare and desireable." There will be others along shortly to argue the opposite, I'd say.

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

IMO I like blazers better, I finally found a blazer not to long ago, passed on quite a few Jimmy's. I also think resale is better on a blazer.

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

I passed on a Jimmy in 1980 when I bought my 71 Blazer simply because of the grille. Today I would like to have a nice 71/72 Jimmy. the front of a car/truck does make a big difference to alot of people. I like a previous posters wife couldn't stand the look of the silverado front too much plastic chrome so I got a Z71 suburban and a GMC truck. I think as time goes on the market for them will keep up. After all GMC is the higher end of the GM truck line. Back in 80 when I bought my 71 4x4 Blazer you could find plenty of 2wd blazers they were viewed as weird station wagons Now they are gold

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

Personally I love the GMC in your face quad headlight front grill, it just looks more agressive and tuffer. I also like it because it looks more dated and classic because the whole front end is chromed out and not plastic. Most people like the 71-72 Chevy grill, and I do agree it looks very nice IMO it looks better than the 69-70 Chevy grill. I have came across several people that think that the GMC grill just looks ugly though. When I park next to my dads 70 K20, and his 72 K10 my GMC just stands out and looks much meaner.

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

I went out looking for the Jimmy. Now, don't get me wrong if I found an equal Blazer and no Jimmy, I'd have the Blazer now. But I was leaning toward the Jimmy so it would be different. Resale?? Who resells!!

But than again I decided to restore a 68 firebird rather than the "common" camaro. Just a little more unique I guess. Pontiac/GMC thing I guess.... Or maybe its just the 4 headlights and more chrome up front

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

I am with Jason915, I LIKE the GMC grill and front end, you get one with all of it's chrome glory and it makes waffle-Plastic blazer look tame....and cheap. That is why I went with a billet insert on my 72 SWB 4x4.......and I am going to admit to what others will scream sacrilage!!!!! ...............I am working on what is licensed as a 69 Blazer and it will have a Jimmy front end! I really don't care for the 69-70 grilles either...talk about dated.....so hey we all love these trucks and it IS all about personal preference...

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

In 1995 I was looking for a 69 or a 70 blazer because I liked the grill better than the 71 an 72 grill I wish they would have made a 68 blazer I think that grill lookes even better. I could not find a 69 or a 70 blazer here in Ohio that was werth the money they wanted for them (to much rust) Then I saw 70 jimmy in the paper for sale it only had 48000 miles on it and he was asking 7000 for it. I thought it was way to much money but I went and looked at it anyway. I brought it home that weeked. All the truck shows I have went to I have never seen another jimmy. Fells good to go to a show where no one has what you have. Love that GMC grill

Man, where I come from they make 68 Blazers, I just built one. I took a long bed parts truck and unbolted the rust free clip and traded it with the 72 rust free clip and BAM a 68 Blazer! The 68's have side markers so once I match the color it will look "like it belongs there" Heck, I may even have a few folks tell me they had one just like it!! I like em all, but for some reason I am partial to my bellybutton Chevies except I too bought an 05 GMC for the better looking grill!!

Yeah, ironically, every new truck I've bought since 1995 has been a GMC because I liked the grille better than the Chevrolet!

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

I have had 5 different 72 Blazers over the years. I bought my first 72 Jimmy several months ago. I loved the front grill of the Jimmy, but I couldn't get over the Jimmy name. I think it is a horrible vehicle name. I sold the Jimmy (also had a lot of rust) and bought a Blazer (almost totally rust free). I think the K5 Blazer symbol is ten times more appealing than the Jimmy symbol. Call me weird, but it is all in the name to me. That being said, my next SWB 4x4 will more and likely be a GMC because of the grill. Mike

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

I bought my Blazer 6 years ago.I would have payed the same for a Jimmy.I like both.Seeing a Jimmy like Garys and k-nuts makes me want a Jimmy to go with my Blazer.
I have a complete 68 chevy front that I am considering putting on my Blazer.

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

Thanks much for everyone's opinion so far! Since this is my first 67-72 truck in 6 years (have had 6 CST Blazers, 3 K-style Suburbans, and 3 trucks in the past), I think I may just go ahead and put some time / money in ths truck. Let's face it, if any truck of this era is "done right," it's gonna look good!

Re: Blazer vs. Jimmy

Oh yeah, Gary 70 Jimmy, that's an AWESOME looking Jimmy! If I had to pick a color combination, it'd either be your blue (and what appears to be parchment) or white / saddle........can you post more pics or PM some to me?

One quick question: can anyone suggest a good place for me to go to see a photo of what the paint scheme is supposed to look like on a 72 Jimmy grille? The one I have is badly faded, and I just want to make sure that I correctly re-paint the areas that are supposed to be black and don't on the areas that are supposed to be metal........thanks
