Have you guys accumulated any sort of buyers guide on these things? I'm looking to get rid of my 2005 F-150 and buy a truck more my style. My only deciding factor so far is appearance.

Lame I know, I really need to find info on what years are more desireable, or if it even matters since the well cared for trucks are more of a beautiful frankenstein of parts from all years.

How far does $10K-$12K go on these trucks? Right now I'm looking for a clean truck inside and out for a semi-daily driver that's gotta to be rust free, reliable, 2wd, fast, and with good paint. I might even put a TPI on it.

I won't go past 1975 because of CA smog requirements.

I'm guessing price range is as much as you're willing to spend.

What are some common areas for TLC and upgrades that I should look for, that I would end up having to do eventually? a/c, power steering, suspension work, what are the weak points?

With that amount to spend you should be able to find a really clean truck. The major thing on anything old is get the best body possible, and if it is painted triple check the body work.
The mechanic stuff adds up but if you are not a body man or know one, the money really adds up.
Start with a good foundation and add the options as you want.
Body style etc is really personal choice......I prefer the 67's and 55-57.
Straight and square frame, hopefully power coated, orginal rust free sheet metal, it is out there, especially in the lower western states, far away from the ocean and as dry as possible, plus some of the northwest, idaho, Colorado etc
Buy some mags, get some catalogs and stay on the board!

If your wanting a daily driver a 71-72 would be best, disc brakes and power steering. 73-75 rust WAY to much and aren't worth as much as 67-72's are. IMO don't look as good either

I've torn down/reassembled about 80% of my vette by hand, so I'm not afraid of mechanical work, I just don't want a hoopty, I need a clean slate, something turn-key I can use for work. I definitely don't want to deal with body/paint.

I do like the 67-72s fleetsides better. We've always had the 73+ in our family, but they're more bland and too common.

The nose on the 67-68 is killer IMO.

I'd say get in and go for a sunday afternoon drive,and have a look around.I find all kinds of nice trucks sitting in yards with for sale in the window.

Just a thought.

I agree with tee it up,71-72 are much better to drive.I would rather drive my 71 than my 67 because of ps and disc brakes.

So it looks like the 67-68s have a different hood & fenders from the 69-up? I wonder how easy the front clip is to change out.

I don't get why I don't see more of these on the road.

67-68, 69-70, 71-72 look diferent from each other.

They are very common. You just haven't noticed them. The majority are beaten up work trucks that never turn your head.

I notice them all over now that I own one.

It easy to switch out a front clip but it makes it easier if you have a complete 67-68 clip to trade out a 71-72 clip. About the only thing the same on both clips are the inner fenders.

i love my 69 3/4 ton...
i have just completed repainting this baby..added all the options i wanted..
tilt.tach,toolbox, power seats rear slider. new carpet,stereo,wheels tires, already had 3 fuel tanks a/c.power steering, was going to install disc brakes,
but really!!!! i am happy with the stock power drum brakes? call me stupid?
heres some pictures...i got about 10,000 invested.with the brakes.engine stuff etc. you be the judge..
would jump in a go anywhere. or tow my 85 pro-street under the cover in the back ground. still need to reinstall my door speakers

I love my 71. I have done lots of things to make it 'my own'. These old girls have a ton of potential (or 3/4 ton of potential in my case

I updated my drivetrain with a 99 suburban L31 Vortec and 4L60E. She runs soooo smoothly now.

I have to agree they rust more..the few that are left up here have huge holes and sores all over the body. The 67-72's rust as well, but not nearly as bad as the mid 70's trucks.

I agree with almost everyone, choose based on your personal style, go with a super close look at the body, especially in the typical rust spots, under the passenger side floor board near the kick panel air vents, get one that is an a/c cab (super nice to have on those super hot days) check under the radiator support mount (these rust because of the battery tray location) check the top around the window on both the passenger and driver side (the like to rust out very slowely but once it starts there goes the pillar and most of this rust is hidden look for the bubbles) oh yeah and the other typical spots rockers cab corners and braces. Good luck and post pics once you get one, go on you know that you want a 72 w/ a/c p/s p/b tilt, tach buckets

I guess it's different here. Most 73-80's truck have little or no rust while 67-72 almost always need rockers, cab corners, cab braces or something replaced.

I didn't say a word about value, or appearence but I'll stick to my opinion about what years rust more.

Either one being better looking or worth more is nothing more than one persons opinion. Both of them have their appeal. Rust with any vehicle is dependent upon the area of the country the vehicle comes from, but more importantly, how the owner took care of it, ie, covering it up, garaged, etc.
I have both body styles, and I can tell you my square body Jimmy gets as many compliments as my 2wd Blazer does, especially when the top is off.
Again, its just personal preference.

10-12K will buy you a nice, virtually vinished vehicle. I recommend a 2wd Jimmy or Blazer in either body style. Good luck.

If you've got 10-12K to spend, in my opinion, you can buy a very nice finished truck with that. Unfortunately these trucks are typically worth about half of what you put into it. If you can find a truck someone dropped 15K into you should be able to pick it up for 8-10K. Just my opinion. Check out ebay for some price ideas. I'm talking about nice well done drivers, not show trucks

I am partial to the 73 and up trucks. Yes, they aren't "worth" as much as the 67-72's...but you can get more for your money with a 73+. Parts are cheaper (and easier to find), you can upgrade them with bolt on parts from newer trucks (all the way up to 1991!), and they are increasing in popularity quite a bit as of late. I will agree the 73+ trucks rust faster up here in the rust belt...but if this is your semi-daily driver...that won't matter.

Thanks for the advice. I don't love my new Ford, and after not driving it for two weeks, I don't miss it either.

I'll see what is here locally. Once I get an exact idea what I'm looking for, I'll put mine up for sale. There's no other way I'll be able to put more than a few grand down.

There was a 75 chevy Cheyenne in yesterdays Chattanooga paper. It was a one owner 40K mile truck. The ad said it looked like new. I think the price was 4K. You couldn't touch a 67-72 with those specs for that kind of cash.

While I'm partial to 70-72 2wd Blazers I think any of the chevy trucks are neat. The 67-72's are more collectable than 73-up but anyone who thinks Ken's (N2TRUX) truck isn't worthy is WRONG (it was in a Classic Trucks magazine, how many of the rest of us can say that? If I'm right it was the first ever 73 up featured in the magazine...)! Just remember, the 55-57 truck guys think their trucks are worth more than 67-72's (they are probably right... )

My first 2wd Blazer was a 77, my first chevy truck was a 64, I'd like to have a 2nd gen 55.

Pick one you like and don't look back!
