Mp3 players?
Anyone got an MP3 player installed in their ride? I am thinking of going that route, instead of the regular CD player.

Not in my pickup (I wish!) but my brother has an Aiwa CDC-MP32 in his '94 Z28. It's a really trick stereo, and if I were buying a deck now (mine is an older one, an Aiwa CDC-X136) it's the one I would get. It sounds great, it's easy to use, and looks awesome. The motorized face gets a few ooohs as well.
The only downside to said motorized face is the fact that if the thief realizes that the stereo has one of those...they'll still take it. The face isn't removable, as far as I can tell. When it folds, it looks as if it was removed. But it's still there...which is probably why the first one got stolen.

I don't have one myself, but my friend just put one in his '69 Camaro and it is awesome. He cruises around with just one disk now, it holds like 200 songs or something like that.

I'm not all that familiar with them, and I know it's a cool idea, but it does bring up the subject of copyright laws, and musicians having control of their product. And the absolute in this equation is that they (the musicians) have no intention of either giving their work away or allowing it to be given away or shared for free much longer. Free is a nice concept, but it don't pay the bills! 8-tracks were pretty cool when they first came out too, but now they aren't good for much of anything other than a poor excuse for an ice scraper. Well, maybe more than that, if, of course, it is from a good artist, which could make them a collectable to some people. I'm not preachin' or raggin' on anyone, just stating a legitimate point to think about.

The one in the '69 Camaro plays disks with MP3s on it as well as normal CDs so I don't think it'll end up being phased out as quick as the 8-track...JMO. He's also got a subscription to a music club that he downloads the music from. For something like 11.99 a month he can download as much as he wants and there are no copyright laws broken because the club buys the music from the record companies.. or something like that

I'm going to put an MP3 player in my 69. I'd like to get one with a hard drive, but thats like a grand. They just make sense, you can get like 300 songs on a CD at basically the same quality. I don't think they will ever stop MP3 sharing on the interent. But I do feel that the way music is sold is going to change drastically soon. Some CD's are now encoded with anti-sharing code wrote into the song files, but there are so many hackers out it takes about 3 days for someone to find away around it.

I just picked up a Kenwood x859 and have yet to install it in my car. I really like the idea of being able to burn a bunch of mp3's to a single disc and having all of that music at your fingertips.

Rockford Fosgate
I asked a guy I know that runs a car audio store I wanted a MP3 compatible in dash unit, and which is the best. He told me to get a Rockford Fosgate, he went on to say that he hadn't bought an in dash unit for his car in 6 years but he had to have one of those. He said he'd tried them all and the Fosgate unit was the best. So I bought one. And I love it. I usually encode my MP3's at 128-160kbps for the car, and a disc can hold like 150 songs. Makes it really easy for road trips, no disc swapping.

I'm no expert on these, but from some info I gathered, is the the Rockford ones are the way to go. I read that most of the others, when you pick a song, you have to wait for it to load for a second or two. With the Rockfors units, they have all the songs loaded, and there is no delay.
I'm not sure if that is a problem, but it may be something you could get sick of? Again, I have never used one, its just something I read.

$299?? WOW This one retails for $999, but he is getting it for $700 taxes in. Mind you, that is in Canadian dollars. And I also put $400 down as a gift for him, so Iguess he's paying the same thing in the end!!

I have a Kenwood 859. Never have had a problem with it taking time to load. Typically I get 200 songs on a CD . I have 900 on file on my computer at home and they all fit on 5 CD's. I paid $249 delivered from some on line car audio place. Best investment I ever made.
