Heating
I have a 72 Custom camper with the 400 engine. The problem with the pickup is that the engine heats when it is at an idle. I had the radiator boiled and the fan is a 6 blade with a prefect shroud. Any ideas as to why it heats and what I can do about it?

I would have to say (educated guess) replace the water pump.
Although, if you have a fan clutch, I'd replace it first. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. Have you ever heard of changing the water pump pully to a smaller size?

I wouldn't bother. Not enough of a market for a kit, so that leaves yu in the junk yard measuring stuff. If you get the back spacing off, even by a little, your belts will not be lined up correctly and that will make youe pump bearing wear faster, you'll toss belts on the free way, and there's no gurantee you'll do any good spinning it faster. After a certian RMP, the water will cavitate and do absolutly nothing.

how close to the radiator is your fan and is your shroud in good shape??

could be something as simple as replacing a thermostat... also, the factory shrouds didn't seal real well where they meet the radiator, you might want to seal all the air gaps so that the fan is only pulling air thru the core, makes a big difference.... ignition timing can also affect the engine temp...

The shroud is in excellent shape but the fan is about 4 to 5 inches from the radiator. It has a transmission cooler and air conditioning radiators so they obstruct the air somewhat. I haven't tried turning the idle up yet. The motor has around 3 thousand miles on a rebuild and runs beautifully.

you might try washing out the a/c condensor and the trans cooler. If they have alot of bugs or dirt in them, they will restrict alot of air flow, and there isn't alot there to begin with at idle.

What type of rebuild did you have done? Was it stock, mild, or gobs of power that could affect temp. Check your gauge also.

The rebuild was not radical except the mechanic talked me into an RV cam (whatever that is). I use the pickup to pull a 6,000 pound sailboat to the West coast from Montana. It has plenty of pulling power once I get a few RPMs but it has a difficult time pulling the boat up a ramp. The heating problem usually involves having my pickup on the boat ramp at an idle while I load the boat. The exhaust pipes are in the water so I don't want to turn the engine off as the exhaust would fill up. The ignition is electronic but is an aftermarket type out of JC Whitney. I will go look at the shroud to make sure it is sealed. Several people have told me that big block Chevys are prone to heating...

Ive never had a BBC with a heating problem,i could start anyone and let it idle all day and im in AZ.is it only heating up when pipes are in water,engine isnt gonna breathe good like that,id start simple with timing,thermostat,fan clutch,water pump and so on.

All good advice. I'll check the timing as the thermostat, water pump have been changed and I have not checked the timing. This is a great resource!

I hope your not sticking your truck into salt water to launch the boat. Look around for a steeper ramp. Try turning off truck before exhaust enters water and rolling it in. Water shouldn't get up and higher than level emersed.
How about a front hitch in front for launching boat, a lot of guys around here do that.

It is fresh water and only twice a year. Once at the beginning of the summer and once at the end of summer. When I take it to the coast they sling the boat in. The ramp here is quite steep--as I go over the edge of the ramp, I have to creep (and I mean creep) down the ramp. If it develops any momentum, the boat will drag the PU down the ramp. The PU just barely has enough power to pull the boat back up the ramp. I have a 3.54 rear-end and it is a 2WD. However, with that being said, the PU functions very well.

If you checked everything that was suggested and still have problems, an electric puller fan will solve your dilemma.... I added an a/c condenser and trans cooler to the front of my fresh 4 row radiator and had the same problem til I went with the electric unit. Now it can idle all day in hot weather with the a/c running, no worries... I think Wes sells a unit made for these trucks...??

Pull a couple plugs and read them. An excessively lean condition can cause this.

When I drove down to Phoenix last summer, my truck was overheating only when I was idling, sitting still. I threw my raditor cap in the garbage, then I changed my water pump, then finally I got the heavy duty radiator, (I found the longer brackets and a cracked shroud in a junkyard), and after all that, it STILL overheated. For the hell of it, I got a new radiator cap when I was in Autozone one day. Problem solved. My dad always told me to check the cheapest and simplest things first. He will never hear this story.

The radiator cap keeps your system pressurized, which lowers the boiling point. I had to try and sound smart after looking so stupid.
