Leaky TH350
Howdy folks- new poster to the board (but it's gotten me through several projects already- thanks).
I've got a 72 Cheyenne, 350/ TH350 transmission rebuilt in 2001 but not many miles on it. I've had the truck for about 2 months. The tranny is leaking (not a huge deal- shifting great but still annoying). The strange thing is that it the leak seems to get heavier as the truck sits (ex- 2 drops day after driven, a pretty good puddle if it sits for a couple days- and yes, I'm wiping it up every day so it's not just my imagination). This would make sense if it was coming from the pan or the bottom side of the transmission, but it seems that most of the fluid is pooling on the starter so it has to be coming from the top of the housing (I guess). WTF? Any ideas? Gracias |

Re: Leaky TH350
Another somme what common one, look at the dipstick tube. TThere should be a tab on it that bolts to the motor. If you can grab the top and move it left and tight more than a 1/4 inch, and if it feels like something is flexing instead of solidly mounted, then the tab probably ripped off and fluid is getting out from there.

Re: Leaky TH350
I dunno.....just looked and the dipstick tab is intact, the cooler lines and the kickdown cable don't appear to be leaking....but I swear that I saw freaking tranny fluid in a valley on my intake manifold. eh...
Maybe I need to take a nap and see if I can catch the Dexron fairys dumping crap all over my engine when I'm not looking... |

Re: Leaky TH350
your fluid may be foaming up and leaking out of the top of the tube.

Re: Leaky TH350
nosir. I've been keeping pretty constant tabs on it cause I don't want it to get too low....but it's not overfilled.
I actually replaced the selector seal a few weeks ago before realizing that wasn't it (if it sits it runs all over the place)....guess I should have noticed the fluid on the starter first. Still cornfused... |

Re: Leaky TH350
Could it be coming out off the vacuum tube that goes to the modulator?

Re: Leaky TH350
Put a piece of cardboard down below the rig and see if you can figure out where it is dripping down from. Then trace the "stream" of fluid to the source.
Have you checked to see if the pan seal is good?

Re: Leaky TH350
Any chance it could be the front main seal?
