In between periods of being frusterated by the 700r4 install
![]() One is the alternator bracket. My 68 has the factory bracket installed, as pictured below (thanks Luv). My problem is with the adjustment part of it. I forget the belt lengths at the moment but one length is too short and the alt hits the valve cover. 1/2" longer and the bracket is too short to tighten the belt. I picked up an after market bracket (the arm part) at autozone that was longer but it had the wrong curvature. I maybe could have ground some off the lower edge of it and made it work but opted to return it, get my 12 bucks back and look for a better option. Since this is factory bracketry I know some one else has run into this before. What did you do to correct it? |

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
i had this problem, i had to extend the bracket about 3 inches with some creative angle iron and bolting it to the manifold. this is a chrome version with the same angles and lengths as the original.
i don't know if these pics show it, but it's the best i got since my truck's in paint |

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
'72 trucks have a longer curved adjustment arm that can be used with your brackets to solve your problem.

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
You have to run the later (72?) arm when you use tall valve covers. I save them just for that reason...so go to the longer arm or cut and weld and grind in an extension piece.
Yes, you will have to run a longer belt. |

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
Ok, so I need to dig up a 72 (Or later?) arm and all is well. 72 is gonna be hard to find.
Oddly these aren't tall valve covers. They're old Erson chrome covers. Were on the truck when I got it. Never been cared for so they're more rust that chrome, but not beat up. Wish I knew a way to strip the chrome off so I could paint them. But thats beside the point. Thanks for the very good info guys, looks like a boneyard trip is in order. |

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
my 72 arm is the same as the chrome one i have, it's still short. i had to extend it 3 inches with angle iron as said earlier.

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
So I suppose another alternative would be to move the alt to the passenger side? I'd need the brackets of off... 73-87?

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
well, you're aiming at a short water pump style. the later trucks use a long water pump style.

Re: Alternator Bracket Too Short
IIRC Passenger side mounted alts are long h20 pump only, but I
could be wrong, let me know if you can't find one, it's a extra ![]()
