Question simple disaster

I have a 1989 gmc 1/2 ton 2wd that had a 350 tbi in it,the 350 was bad and i had a 305 leftover from a monte carlo i wrecked, the 305 has 2,000 miles on it so i thought id use it instead of rebuild the 350. as the 350 came out i realized the tbi was cracked so i used the edelbrock carb and intake already on the 305. the problem is that the truck computer ran everything and now it doesnt seem to shift the transmission on time.it winds the rpms up alot b4 it shifts.i used the distributer from the original 350 so the computer could shift the tranny from the rpms of the motor. now the computer is only running the distributer and tranny and im not sure if thats enough to advance or retard my timing automaticly.im pretty lost now and i could really use some advice and/or tips for fixing this problem

I'm gonna move this to engine/drivetrain page so you're more likely to get an answer.

Re: simple disaster

Doesn't the tbi setup still use a tv cable to determine the shift points and the computer only to lock up the converter? I thought the computer controlled shifts came in wiuth the 4L60E trans which is similar to the 700R4 but contolled via computer. If thats the case you should be able to get the tv cable adjusted at a tranny shop and buy the painless kit to make the converter lock up by line pressure instead of the computer. I had to do this to an 80's camaro I put the GM ram jet 350 in. After that it was no problem. Just an idea not sure completely if it's your problem.

Re: simple disaster

Your TV cable is adjusted too tight, line pressures in the tranny are too high. Push the little "D" shaped button on the TV cable, and pull the cable towards the carb a tick or two, and see how it feels. You do not want it to have short stacked shifts, or you'll burn the transmission up in record time.

I'd suggest getting an old non-computer controlled HEI for your timing, and an 83 - 86 700r4 equipped truck torque converter lockup control setup, and get rid of the ECM all-together.
