cracks in steering wheel
I've got another question I need help with.
I want to use the original steering wheel from the 68 but it has some crack in it. How do you repair these? Epoxy or bondo? Thanks for the help. |

Re: cracks in steering wheel
I think that por-15 makes kit to fix the cracks...

Re: cracks in steering wheel
This is not a good place to use bondo, it will crack. I haven't used the por-15 kit or seen the long term results. I have also not seen a repaired wheel that didn't crack again after a few years.

Re: cracks in steering wheel
Seems like I remember Eastwood having a repair kit. I have seen epoxy used and body filler used but like was said they may crack again if sitting in the sun very much however it shouldn't be any more prone to cracking than any part of the outer body where filler is used. IMO

Re: cracks in steering wheel
I was helping a friend of mine do this very fix. The best results we found were using the "Fiber-Glass Bondo" repair material. This does require some painting afterwards and it can be some pretty messy stuff to work with, but it sticks very well and generally will only crack if lots of pressure, hot and cold variations get to it over time.
The cracks need to be opened up to a slight "V" so that the fiberglass resin mix can get fully to the steel in the wheel. This all needs to be clean and free of any old, flaking, chipping plastic and the steel needs to be free of any rust. It may be simply easier to replace the wheel with a new 'stock' wheel, all the same. IMHO Michael Last edited by C. M. Wolf; 12-04-2010 at 12:29 AM. |

There is a pretty good thread on this in the FAQ forum. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and you will see the "Forum Jump" box. Click on the little down arrow on the right side of the box and scroll down to "FAQ Truck Tech". It's down a ways. On that page go down to "Thread / Thread Starter: FAQ Index thread" and click on it. When you get into that scroll down to the "Interior Related FAQ's" section then find "Restore 67 Wheel". I could have just posted a direct link but there is a lot of good info in the FAQ section and now the people that read this thread will know how to get to it. Thanks to Krue for indexing the FAQ's LockDoc
