Question NP205 won't shift into 2wd

I have a 76 GMC 3/4 with a sm465 tranny and a np205. The only shift positions I can get into is 4lo(all the way to the front), neutral, and 4hi. There is no position I can get into that the front driveshaft isn't engaged(except neutral). Is there any adjustment on the shift linkage or any common problem that might be the cause of this?

Thanks,

Worn out shifter linkage is my first guess. Get under it w/ a flash light and have someone else shift it.

Could you have a hub sticking instead that would lead you to believe its missing 2 HI?

Well I checked out the linkage and it looks fine. Both rods are moving in and out fine. Must be something on the inside of the case I guess??

Re: NP205 won't shift into 2wd

2wd on a 205 moves one of the shafts, not both of them. It's only a very small move. Put it in 4wd high, then just tap the shifter alittle and see if it goes in that way. The 205 in my truck is like that, think your in 2wd and it's still in 4wd. Mine is a PITA to get in and out, while the one I'm putting in, you can shift it with your fingers at the shaft, it's that easy.

Re: NP205 won't shift into 2wd

I'll look at it again....it seems that all the way front to back it moves both rods the same amount. I've tried moving it as little as possible but it is either in 4wd or neutral. No matter what I can't get it in 2wd. There doesn't seem to be any adjustments on the linkage either. I will probably end up rebuilding it in a few months cause it is leaking from the front seal and somewhere else in the back.
