maybe you can help me???
Hello all,
I am thinking about buying an old truck off a guy and while it is not a chevy it is a 56 with a 6 in it. My question is this, If i end up going for it what all should i do as it has not been run in 5 years at least? i know it turns by hand. What Should i do first to prep the motor for a fire up? Oil the cylanders change engine oil? Then dissconect the coil and crank it with the starter to prep the motor with oil? Then should i connect the coil and put fresh gas in it and give it a try? i would clean the carb and lines befor i would try it ofcourse. Any tip you can give me ? What about leaded gas? motor has 15,000 miles on it according to the title so should i add lead? i have read diffrent reports on this. I would be keeping the motor if i can get it to go and maybe rebuilding it. i just wanted to see what you could give me for pointers. Also it is not a chevy but i think the same ideas will reply. 2 -3 squirts of oil on each cylinder, let it sit for an hour or so. change the oil and filter if it has one. leave the plugs out and crank it over. you should also clean out the carb. get a rebuild kit for it and go thru it.. drain the tank and put in some gas in it and see if rust runs out of the drain plug. If it does you need to flush the tank. it may need a fuel pump as well add a fuel filter before the pump. once all is clean try to fire it up. it will smoke until the oil burns off.
see if it runs and then worry about valve seats. You can do thise at rebuild. |

with the low miles i want to hopefully just clean and paint the motor. Thats why i am worried about the gas. Lead or no lead

If its stock original its leaded gas if you can get it (only NASCAR Fuels, Avation fuels, racing fuels and the like can have lead), but unleaded won't hurt it if you drive it normaly and not under heavy loads or extended high speeds. use a premium grade not the lowest. This will help with the spark knock problem.
Lead was mainly used to control spark knock some say for valve seat lubrication but from all I've read on it there is little mention of engine damage using unleaded in an older engine under normal opertaion other than some guy said his uncle the mechanic said so type info. If your going to drive it daily you may want to think about doing the exhaust valve seats. For the cost of a few hundred dollars you'll have peace of mind and no limitaions on driving.
