Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
If you didn't index mark the shafts when they were disassembled, they will need to be balanced as well, if the yokes have not been removed, ie; for u-joint replacement, you're OK. Sorry rage'nrat, I don't have pixs, but will explain. When joining the shafts, the ears,( u-joint cups) on the slip yoke must be in line with the ears on the front end of the driveshaft. (not the front yoke). It should look like this: front yoke vertical, front of 1st shaft horizontal, hanger bearing, slip yoke horizontal, front of 2nd shaft vertical, rear of 2nd shaft vertical. When the shafts are built, they are balanced separately, so they just need to be assembled correctly. Hope this make sense and helps.
Karl

Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
I always thought the U-joints on the front half and back half should be exactly 90° from one another, but I remember the factory service manual describing an installation procedure based on counting the splines between the two shafts that is slightly different than 90°. My manual isn't accessable right now, but I can check later if needed.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
This would be good for the FAQ if someone can add a pic or two.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
just got in from phasing (timing) my drive shafts...sure enough they were incorrect...
took it for a test drive..smooth.... cleaned the living well you know out of the drive shaft.. any under coating will throw the balance off... painted with a very light coat of paint... tried to take pictures under the truck.., but they were not good enough to show any thing..except a clean drive shaft.. here's some book pictures Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-12-2007 at 07:02 AM. |

Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
Sweet! Maybe this is my recurring vibration i've never been able to get rid of. Looks like i'm off 90* First driveline I had was off 45* lol. Tried lining it up, but dont think I did it right. I then replaced it with a driveline I got from my brother. Just put it together like it was when I got it. But its off too.
Hey, one more related question. I remember back before I got this truck there used to be shims between the carrier bearing and the frame mount. By the time I got the truck those shims were gone. Any idea what the heigth of the carrier bearing is supposed to be?

Re: 2 piece drive shaft timing question
on the tail of the first shaft sticking out of the center support bearing on the end there was a L stamped on the end..
on the slip yoke there was a arrow stamped on it..when mated they lined up just like the book said to do it.. MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE to think i been driving the truck like this for 2 years, i just got a bug up my butt, and decided to check it out. sure enough... like i said i tryed to take pictures under the truck but they just would not turn out..here's what i got. this is the arrow on the slip yoke only found that after a lot of cleaning my front & rear yoke's did have spicer 3-3-69 stamped on them..guess it's the correct drive shaft Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-12-2007 at 07:02 AM. |

Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
Took mine apart and checked it today. The driveline i'm using has 2 splines bent together so that they can only slip together one way. It doesnt match the book pics either. Oh well, someday i'll find that vibration.

Re: 2 piece driveshaft timing question
Is this also true for 1 piece driveshafts, like on my '89 S-10?
This could explain my horrible vibrations.
