tire quandry..
this is strange...since the new engine the 255-60s were no match for all of the brute torque.. which is just for what I hoped for. but I will be going to the track this weekend, so I bought some 285-60-15s. same brand..I have less traction with the taller and wider tires, either that or the engine is getting stronger..hmmm that must be it..lol

I've noticed on the 295/50R15's on my truck, if I under inflate the tires to 20psi I can break'm loose anytime I please until it hits 3rd.
BUT if I keep them at 32-35 they hook up very nice and give a bassit hound bark while hitting 2nd gear. What psi are you running in the rear's? |

Not only does PSI effect it alot, but remember, if your not on a real good surface, then you're just putting more gravel and crap under your tires.

If you put wide street tires in the snow...you'd think about it real quick.

The width of the rim affects the contact patch at the pavement. Tires that are too wide for the rim, will have different contact points at the pavement depending on how much air you put in them. It may be that they make contact only in the center, or only at the outer part of the tread, again depending on air pressure. Best way to know, may be to have access to water that you can spray on the tread (paint?) to show the pattern on the pavement at different PSI's. Of course, you'll need a compressor/air tank and a guage that you trust. It's trial and error.

Another way to do that test would be with a large smoth parkinglot.
Do burnouts untill the patch is an even black mark, no heavy black with light black on the edges, nor visa-versa. You get the even marks by altering the air pressure. Just go a couple pounds at a time. This is what the folks at good year told me to do a few years ago when i asked about this. I was doing a report for school and had to come up with all kind of tests and answers on tires. It was a butt load of work, but I am educated quite nicely by the pros. |

use some chalk on your tires to get the proper pressure, put the chalk across the tread and drive , you'll see what your contact area/patch is, adjust pressure accordingly, soft chalk like the meter maids use is best...
got this out of a 4x4 mag...

LOL!!!
Actually, the Citation I was driving was a complete total slug. At least it was loud though...only having an exhaust manifold (not even a header pipe) gave it the cool tune. |
