I have a friend with an 82 c-10 and I think he has Flowtech shorty headers for a Camaro. Ill try to get the part number from him. They do not hang down below the frame and if the frame was Z'd then it would be that much further from the ground.

You can also order them from O'reilys. If they have those in Cali.

I used Hedman shorties for 73-87 pickups. They were new last year I think. They were cheaper then the Flowjunks too if I remember right.

How much were they? Would they hang down on a frame not Z'd.

I think they were about $130. They are a shorty from Hedman. I dont remember the part # off hand, but they worked great on my 4" Z.

Those look a tad too long to work for a Z job.

Re: With the Frame Z'ed on 73-87 what Headers are you guys running?
When you Z the frame shouldnt you be able to use longer headers since your moving the motor up? And if those are the same headers that I think they are then I think they will hit the motor mount.

Re: With the Frame Z'ed on 73-87 what Headers are you guys running?
You are moving the motor up technically, but it is moved up in relation to the firewall, i.e, the outlet on the headers will be spitting out in the heater assembly, and the reason for doing the Z is to get the rest of the truck closer to the ground. Those last Ebay ones look like 3/4 headers, and unless they are titanium, those sparks are NOT gonna look cool.

Re: With the Frame Z'ed on 73-87 what Headers are you guys running?
I still dont see how they would drag the ground?

Re: With the Frame Z'ed on 73-87 what Headers are you guys running?
With a 3/4 length header, you are pointed almost straight at the ground, and you still need to route the exhuast pipe under the truck which is WAY closer to the ground. The header probably wont actually drag, but it's going to be a pretty tight bend to get the pipe coming off those to stay above the bottom of the frame.

Re: With the Frame Z'ed on 73-87 what Headers are you guys running?
Do you have any pics of how you routed your exhaust Loweredd?
I followed your site on doing a 4" Z on my frame, and now I am mocking up my tranny x-member. I need to make exhaust cutouts for it, just looking for ideas on what others did. I plan on running some shorty headers, But I also might look into lowering my motor mounts a inch or 2, and maybe even moving them forward a inch or 2. Anyone got any pics on where they moved their mounts to accomodate the "Z"? |

Re: With the Frame Z'ed on 73-87 what Headers are you guys running?
3/4 headers are NOT pointed at the ground ... they are closer to 45 degrees. I have 3/4 Chevelle headers on mine and I can't see how they would drag the ground on a stock frame ... much less one that has been Z'd.
As far as the exhaust routing ... the dumps for the 3/4 Chevelle headers is just ABOVE the frame rail ... a mild bend will get the exhaust behind the frame rail and above the "scrub" line of the frame. Last edited by Shane; 08-05-2006 at 09:43 AM. |

It should be possible to run full length headers & not have ground clearance issues if the front frame section has been Z'd. Think about it.... full length headers typically locate the collector just below the bottom of the frame rail which is why they are too low for the typical slammed truck. But, w/a Z, those same collectors should now be above the bottom of the frame rail (depending on the amount of Z). Everything should remain unchanged as far as header fit within the engine compartment w/the exception of items located on the firewall.
