getting ready to purchase hurst mastershift for my 3 speed (68 sb engine lwb fleet) i started cruising around e-bay or evil bay as you guys call it and started thinking about a 4 speed. what will work? m20, m21, t10? there are a lot out thier and i dont know one from the other. what should i look for? what will i run into on install. the coolest thing is a chrome hurst stick with a white ball.thanks pkj

Re: what 4 speed?
You can make any 4 speed work. It really depends on what you want to do with it.
Here's a thread on installing an NV 3500 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...45#post1749645 It's a 5 speed OD truck trany plus Hurst makes a stick for it. Only thing is it won't handle anything more than a stock 350.

Re: what 4 speed?
You want a SM465 if you want to speed-shift and hot rod around. They are, small, light, strong, smooth-shifting. Perfect for what you want. They are cheap and plentiful, too.

Re: what 4 speed?
One of my ole heaps has a muncie M-20 hurst shifter. Did not change anything to install it. Removed the 3 speed then installed the 4 speed munci.

Re: what 4 speed?
thanks. the sm465, is that what it is called or is it a version of muncie or borg warner? are the m-20s all the same or vehicle specific? i hear a lot of questions regarding spline counts, shaft dia., grooves, and tailshaft length. i know i will have to get into some mods, but would like to be aware upfront. thanks. pkj

Re: what 4 speed?
No, I was just joking around about the 465, sorry about that. If you want to Hot-Rod around, go with a Saginaw or Muncie car tranny. The 465 is an undergrown dumptruck tranny, weighs about 200lbs and shifts slow.

Re: what 4 speed?
okay you got me good i needed the laugh thanks. just proves i know nothing about what i want. so all the info i can gather on this will be a huge help. i did run a saginaw in my vega behind a dual quad 350. i found the clutch to be useless for speed shifting so i just put up with the grinding. the trans held up, but then light car with 13 inch street tires so would it work okay in truck?
thanks pkj |

The Saginaw 4 speed is worthy of a look unless your heavy on the skinny pedal all the time. Even so, I know most of the stock car drivers around here run them but I suspect that it's because the are cheap & easy to find. Saggys are around $200-$250 here and they are the same size & configuration as a Stock 3 speed that came in our trucks. They have a different shifter mount bracket than the Munchie trannies. GM trannies should be 10 coarse splines, 1 1/8 dia. [someone please tell me if I'm wrong about that] That is all 3spd, 4spd & autos. The rings in the output shaft of the 4 speeds denote the ratios are but I don't know what = what, The 4 gear will always be 1:1 Here is a link to the HURST Transmission ID chart. it's handy to print out & take with you when shopping for a tranny. It shows bolt patterns and ID markings of Autos, 3 & 4 speeds. http://go.mrgasket.com/pdf/trans_id.pdf |

Re: what 4 speed?
How about and A833/MY6 4 speed with the fourth gear being an overdrive gear from 81-86 chevy truck. Pretty much a bolt in, built very strong. We have one and love it, kind of depends what you rear gears and usage of the truck will be. Factory hurst shifter came with the tranny.

Re: what 4 speed?
OK...if you are running more than say 300 hp you better start thinkin' about a Muncie...the M20 wide ratio, M21 & M22 close ratios are all built to withstand HP and torque. The SM's are generally not equipped to handle much more than stock motors.

Re: what 4 speed?
I remember seeing several saginaws flying to scrap behind a 79 camaro when I was younger. If you are going to hot rod around go for the muncie. Regualar 3 and 4 speeds have the same final 1:1 ration so if you were looking for one for extra top end it's not going to happen unless you use that truck 4 speed.
