Possible transmission problems?

Just recently... the last couple weeks I've noticed a kind of squeak/whine noise coming from the engine compartment. At first I was baffled as to what it was, then I started troubleshooting. Thought it might be an accessory making noises, so I repacked the alt. bearing. That wasn't it, quiet. Then I thought maybe the power steering pump. That wasnt it either, quiet as well. Moving on, I noticed my passenger side header was extremely close the frame rail, so I took it off and made a little notch so it would be completely clear. Still having this problem with the squeaking/whining noise. I stuck my head in the compartment after I had driving for about 20 mins. There is a noise coming from the trans area. The noise isn't like you can hear it a block away, but it is evident. What could be making that noise? Converter, front pump? I have a TH350 trans that I bought rebuilt from a discount tranny place about 2 years ago. I only have about 4-5000 miles on the trans and converter. The converter was a stall unit from PAW discount parts. Any ideas on how i can diagnosis this any further? I need input..... thanks!

Does it do it while moving or sitting still or both?

If it does it while moving check your U joints/carrier bearing.

If it does it while sitting still I would say you gona probably need to take the trans out and check the torque converter/trans front pump.

Does the stall have the proper clearance from the front pump?

Did it just start doing it or has it been doing it and just got louder?

Check the Torque Convertor cover, they are bad for getting pushed up from underneth and the TC rubbing slightly as it rotates.

The noise happens both when i'm moving and in park..... so I know it isnt the U-joints. I don't have a dust cover over the converter/flex plate, so that couldnt be causing the noise. It's just started this within the last couple weeks. What did you mean about proper clearance between the stall and the front pump? I thought you were just supposed to fully seat the converter into the pump, and then bolt up and go? I really don't want to deal with this. I mean its bad enough paying for parts, but I HATE DROPPING/INSTALLING TRANNIES!!!! Ugh, I was just saying how I never have any problems with my truck to a friend ...... now i feel dumb

Could be the front pump on the tranny. Double check to make sure you have enough fluid.

The clearance he's talking about is not the back-and-forth clearance between the converter and pump it's the rotational clearance. Sometimes a bushing is needed to make sure that there isn't excessive slop. Your converter might be binding up a little bit as it turns, rub and make that noise. There's also seals and stuff that might be worn out. I'd check to see if the torque converter neck is scarred up when you pull it out. Check the inner diameter of the pump to make sure it's within spec. If not you'll have to yank the pump and install a new bushing...

yeah man, i have the same sorta noise coming from my trans area, except mine is a 4-speed manual....its like a little bird chirping at certain rpm when it vibrates more than other times. the noise stops when i crawl under and put pressure on the tranny with my hand, so i tightened everything up, but still there, im guessing it must be the throwout bearing or something...damn

New 69 owner was right on with what I was talking about.

Btw make sure you check all the little things like the linkage etc.

I forgot to ask if it gets faster with engine RPM.
