60-66 steering wheel???? Actually 1966

Being new to the 60-66 trucks I am starting fresh. This truck was a three on the column that is now a 4 in the floor. I am thinking about finding a floor shift steering column and factory steering wheel instead of the old column and small wheel that is on it. I have heard the old original steering wheels are very big but I have yet to lay my eyes on one and I have not seen any on Ebay.

Any of you have pictures of what the factory steering wheel looks like?
Is it too big for the cab?
What other steering wheels do you recomend....I have the three spoke ralley style on my 67-72's.

There is power steering on the truck.

Here is a picture of a stock 60-66 steering wheel. I personally like the original style steering wheels but that's just me. Nice truck by the way.

1966 Custom Cab option with the chrome horn ring. Ain't she a beaut?! Some day It will all be painted "light fawn" again.

They only made 'em like that one year, although the '66 truck steering wheel looks suspiciously like the one that came in the 1965 Nova. (see pictures below) The two are interchangeable and will swap horn rings. I really like the 4 metal rings around the rim of the wheel. They break it up so you can paint the wheel a classy two-tone.

Aye! bu' Isn't that wha' a kilt is?

That's actually an old Pendleton wool blanket I had laying around. The pattern was vaguely similar to the Ancient Smith Tartan without the blue,

but purely by coincidence.

me wearing a Gordon tartan posing with me best mate's pipes 12-'02.

Thanks........my oldest and best friend owned this truck for 22 years and one of my other buddies and his uncle had it since new. My best friend and I re-did it 18 or so years ago and he had used it as a boat hauler and play vehicle ever since.

He was killed in a motorcycle accident this summer at Deals Gap and his parents asked if I wanted the truck since I helped build it.

Anyone have a factory steering wheel?

I'll keep an eye out for one - they pop up from time to time. I'm going junkyard trolling this weekend.

I sure would like to be able to find the same steering column and 3-speed shift indicator as you have. I converted my powerglide to a Turbo 350. Everything is proper except for that.

Re: 60-66 steering wheel???? Actually 1966

Good luck. mine came with a first generation TH400. I can honestly say I've never seen another 3 speed auto shift indicator in a '60's vintage truck. I have won a lot of bets to the contrary though....

The one in Mike's picture is made for a '60-'65 non custom cab. The '66's were thinner in the center and the cross pieces came off at an angle. It will fit on the column, but you'll have to use a stock '65 horn cap.

Re: 60-66 steering wheel???? Actually 1966

The steering wheel and post on my 64 came out of a 78 Camero. Looks good and works well. For a shift indicator, pay a visit to your favorite junk yard and find an older Chevy Van with a TH350. It will install with 3 screws.

Hang on to that one pardner - she's a rare bird!! In 44 years I've seen only one other 60-66 with a 3 speed auto indicator on the column. I don't believe they made them prior to '66 - if it had an auto trans in it it was a power glide. Mine has a first generation TH400.
