Junkyard Shopping for 6-lug Disc Brakes...what to look for ?
Hello there everyone...My name is John and I am new to this forumn. I'm working on a '63 C-10...."Project Rock-a-Billy LO LO".
First of all, do I need the a-arms, or can I just change the ball joints out to 72 and later ??? I would like to keep it 6-lug, so I was told to look for a 2WD Blazer, for they are 6-lug...True or False ??? Anyway, any help would be great !!! Thanks JOHN Restored64@aol.com |

2wd Blazer will be five lug.
You can get a whole crossmember from a 1973 - 1987 Chevy truck and then have the rotors redrilled to a six lug configuration or buy six lug rotors from a vendor. If you have any dirt tracks in your area call a machine shop that is close and they probably have experience redrilling the rotors.

1971 and up were changed to 5 lug.............you might try an aftermarket supplier if you want to keep the 6-lug..............if you do change to 5 lug the ball joints and the tie rod ends can be changed out to do the swap without getting different a-arms...........hemmit

Re: Junkyard Shopping for 6-lug Disc Brakes...what to look for ?
Thank you to all you guys for the replys !!!
Now Primered69, if I was to buy new 6-lug rotor, what would I ask for (year, model) ?? And could I use the hubs from the drums ?? I have a rear-end shop that could drill out the rotors...that sounds like the easiest and fastest way to go. I will look into that. I'm not looking to spend alot of money on a kit....This truck was giving to me for free, and unlike my other cars I'm trying to keep it low budget !! So whatever I can find at Pick-n-Pull would be great. Obviously worn parts will have to be new....my kids are looking forward to cruising in this thing... Thanks again guys !!! JOHN

I think we sould try contacting the company who makes the rotors directly and try to get them to send us the rotors undrilled.. I think its ridiculous for a company to charge 80-90 bucks for redrilled rotors that are 14-20$ for the 5 lug counter part.

and then you will have to pay someone to drill the holes that has a jig.you will never get them in the right place.they have to be perfect for the wheel to bolt on.i drilled a second pattern on a rim to use as a spare and got a couple off slightly.

Re: Junkyard Shopping for 6-lug Disc Brakes...what to look for ?
OK...I did some research
Could I....... ....purchase ball joints and dropped disc brake spindles from a 73.....rotors off a 6-lug 71...., but use my 6-lug hubs ?? I guess it would depend on the bearing sizes, and as well if the rotor would be in the correct location to be centered in the caliper (??) What do you guys think ? JOHN

Go to Auto Zone for rotors and see what their prices are like. It may sound funny, But when I was doing a disc brake conversion, I got 5 lug rotoes at AZ for a third of mail order price. They probably have 6 lug there

Re: Junkyard Shopping for 6-lug Disc Brakes...what to look for ?
If you are going to spend that much money why not just order the ones with 6 lugs from a vendor. You might spend more redrilling a 5 lug rotor. I know most vendors carry the 6 lug rotors. I do agree $90 a rotor is a rip off. I converted my truck to 5 lug. I got lucky and found a 72 rearend at pick and pull when I was doing mine..

Re: Junkyard Shopping for 6-lug Disc Brakes...what to look for ?
I put a set of 6 lugs on my 69 from a 90-93 chevy light duty 3/4 ton. I think you can probably put the same setup on your 63. I installed mine for $250 and got everything including the spindles from the junkyard. I would do some reseach before you go buying though. For some reason that I havn't figured out yet I had to change my lower A-Arm to a 3/4 ton one from same era as my 69. Good luck with your project.
