engine problem on an 82 with 350
when i drive down the road ad get to about 30-35 the engine will cut out and will even die if i dont let off the gas but i can sit in park and rev it up all the way and hold it and it runs fine any ideas on this is it as easy as a fuel pump or as difficult as a transmission? or does anyone know the exact part? is it possible that it could be something on the 700R4 trannie?

a manual fuel pump isn't expensive or hard to put on i don't know why the transmission would cause it to die, sounds like a fuel issue maybe the filter on the carb is dirty? try cleaning or replacing it and the fuel pump, since its a carbureted engine its something simple

Kinda sounds like fuel pump but does not at the same time. Cause it will die and not start and run crappy at random times. But not good alot and then some bad.

Re: engine problem on an 82 with 350
I had the exact same problem with an 85 K5 I used to have. Surprisingly, it was a cracked distributor cap. It would sit and idle and even rev up fine, but driving it was the same issue you are having.

Re: engine problem on an 82 with 350
well it did need a new cap and rotor but that wasnt the problem it still does it anyone else got any suggestions? im bout to pull the carb off and put this other one on its only doing it when the secondary butterfly opens so it could be the secondary jets in the carb?

Re: engine problem on an 82 with 350
sounds like the problem is the carb isn't jetted properly on the secondary side or it has all kinds of gunk clogging the passages on the inside

Re: engine problem on an 82 with 350
What does this beast have for a carb? Is the carb a "Qaudrajet" built by Rochester of Carter. If it is the Rochester Quadrajet, then you are OK, but if the Quad is a "Carter" built unit, then there is a design problem inside where the secondary needles feed through the lower bowl. The Rochester unit has brass inserts around these needles and the metered flow is maintained without problem. The Carter design does not have the brass inserts and the bowl erodes away around the needles and the carb will tend flood and bog out the motor when you accelerate. This cannot be fixed, short of a toss into the junk pile and a Rochester body used in it's place.
