clutch pedal slowing returning up

hey guys im new to the forums. But i have a 1979 Scottsdale with a 350 in it and a 3 spd + granny gear tranny. well when i push the clutch pedal to the floor it very slowly returns up and someitmes it doesn even come all the way up like it should. could this be the throwout bearing? i looked under the dash and saw the clutch lever was rubbing on another piee of metal under there and it feels like it grinds a little bit. has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any ideas? thanks

Dana

Re: clutch pedal slowing returning up

Mine hangs ups about halfway on the return. I understand there is a bronze bushing at the clutch (under dash) pivot point that wears out.

Haven't fixed it yet - my left big toe works fine.

Re: clutch pedal slowing returning up

so that bushing brings the pedal back up? yea right now if i put my toe or foot under the pedal and pull it back up but if i dont then the clutch doesnt disengage all the way.. i was thinking for a quick fix until i get the money to put a new throw out bearing in.. i was thinking of getting a heavy spring and putting one end around lever of the pedal and the other end under the dash somewhere so that when i push the clutch in the spring will pull it back up letting the clutch disengage competely.. any other ideas? or would this one work do you think?

i had the same problem, it was all to do with slop in the linkage. i made up some new linkage with solid rod and some hemi joints, so there was no more wear points.

Re: clutch pedal slowing returning up

hmmm you think u could send a pic ro somehting of how that looks or works.?

theres a metal bracket under the dash that one of the clutch levers rubs against and i was thinking it might be that so i tried to just bend that bracket a hair so it wouldnt rub but that thing is HARD to get to budge.. so does anyone thinnk my idea of the spring would work or should i not even try it?

i wouldnt try it, i would find the caus of it. look at all the holes in all the pivit points, they most likely are egg shaped, like mine were. by using the hemi joints, also know as rod ends, you have a more fluid motion, i also had flexing rods, which also didnt let the clutch depress all the way.

Re: clutch pedal slowing returning up

A throwout bearing that's dragging on the front bearing retainer can also cause that.
