Gotta love old vehicles. Just finished a seat and shoulder belt swap over. Was crusinin out to the steam cleaner to blow off the under carriage. Low and behold the brakes go to the floor.

I felt a little bit of something, but man you learn real quick how much there is to stop. Got home ok. Think I just blew a front wheel cylinder. I'll pull the wheels tomorow. Guess I'll start on that complete brake over haul before the power booster gets here.

Thats what I like about these old trucks, always something needing attention.

Yeah I was excitited. Was gonna photograph the seatbelt and shoulder harness setup after I cleaned it up some. Oh well Maybe it's telling me the photos will be easier with the front end up on jack stands.

You are one lucky guy. when that happened to me--it was the master, not a wheel cylinder--the front of my '67 went under the trailer of a semi crossing in front of me. Maybe I can get a buddy to scan the pics--it wasn't pretty.

Back in '00 I was deliverign pizzas in the old 3/4 ton Longhorn, took an exit ramp at about 80 MPH and when i hit the woah pedal, nothing happened. I about pooped myself right then and there. I managed to get her stopped, and limped her back home after delivering the pizza.
The cutomer asked why I was shaking so bad, when i explained it to her and she noticed I was still at her door in 20 min (this is on the outer edge of our delivery area too) she gave me a $10 tip. That paid for 1/2 of my master cylinder the next day.

i had my brakes lock up and than brake fade made them quite working all togther............ i made it home but it was intresting!

about a month ago i was sitting stopped in heavy traffic. i was flipping through the radio w/ my foot on the brake and all of a sudden i started to slowly creep forward. the harder i pushed the brake the softer it got till it hit the floor. Almost gave tha car in front of me a nudge but as soon as i pumped the brakes they were back. it was a leaky master cylinder.

Then last tuesday i was pulling into a parking spot a the publix, w/ a red porshe 911 in the spot adjacent to me. Threw the column shifter into park left off the brake and just about smacked into the front of the porshe. Almosted crapped my pants and discovered the shifter had gone limp and wouldnt shift out of drive. turned it off in drive and came to find the clamp on the column that connects it to the linkage had come loose.

Sounds like a lot of stained shorts and drivers seats! That's a lot of close calls, guys. Glad you made it home safe. Palallin, you get the trophy, that was TOO close.

had a fun one with the Chevette I drove my sophmore year. in the parkin lot at school hit brakes, nothign there, smacked the back of a ranger, his was 4x4, his bumper went right over mine, couldn't get the hood open for a few weeks.. I got to drive the camaro for a while then

Not exactly brake failure but produced the same feelings behind the wheel. I had just had the front right fender straightened out and had a new front bumper put on after a minor fender bender back in HS. First day I had it back driving to school it snowed a little bit and slippery in the parking lot. I didn't realize how slippery it was when I pulled in next to a '66 Rustang in nice condition. When I hit the brakes the truck was still going straight headed for the Mustang, I was like "Oh Sh&t!" Lifted off the brakes and it suddenly turned away in the nick of time.

Brakes are one of things I never screw around with. When I get a new older vehicle if stuff looks old it gets replaced. Rear wheel cylinders are $12, rebuilt masters are under $30 (atleast for my 75 and 79). all the rubber lines get replaced if the are old looking. Just not worth cutting corners when most of the parts are so cheap. You can pretty well rebuild the WHOLE system for $200. No point in taking chances. I learned that lesson after having a brak failure on my 79. Had the truck about 6 months and drove up Brass town bald (tallest mountain in GA). Even in first gear (auto) with 3.73's I was having to stay on the brakes a pretty good bit of the time. Never exceeded 25 mph on the way down. About half way down the brakes strated to fade BAD! Got her stopped let them cool. Brakes were still real spoongee so put the transfer case in low for extra compression brakeing and crept down. Had to drive 20 miles to find a parts store to get fluid. Gavity bleed the brakes in their parking lot so I could make the 60 mile drive home.
Most people don't relize that brake fluid is supose to be changed every couple of years. The fluid will absorbs moiture and it's boiling point drops dramaticaly. It also becomes acidic and will rot the lines out from the inside out.
