Vin Plate

I picked up this 50 chevy panel for my Dad a couple years ago. He was gonna fix it, then he was gonna sell it, then he was gonna donate it. I finally got it in my shop and I can't find the vin plate. I hurt my back so I can't do much except read. He swears he's got the vin at home on the bill of sale. I just can't find it on the truck anywhere. I have a scottssupertrucks catalogue and wanted to decipher the vin. The book says it was on the door jamb in the later years and on the cowl under the hood in the earlier years, but I just can't seem to find it. Any pointers?

It Should Be On The Drivers Side Front Cab Door Jam.

Re: Vin Plate

The on on my dad's truck is on the drivers side door jamb. It has been painted over and I didn't see it at first. You might look realyclose to see if it has been painted over or if the rivet holes are there and it has gotten broken off through the years.

Re: Vin Plate

Yeah there are holes on the door jamb just above a plate that gives the maximum weights i think. I was kinda hoping I was wrong and it was somwhere under the cowl that I didn't see. Is there another place where the vin can be found? I guess I mean, how am I to go about registering this thing now?

Re: Vin Plate

Well I could tell you to find an old basket case doner and barrow the plate and title but that would be illegal. But I don't beleive it would be wrong if you needed to cut out that part of the door jamb and replace it with a doner from a junked truck. Hmmmmmm, I wonder.

Re: Vin Plate

Somewhere on the top of the frame rail its stamped in. Mine was under the cab. Do you have a title? if you do or a bill of sale get a plate made. If not buy a title and change the vin.

Re: Vin Plate

I do have a bill of sale, or rather my dad does. Been reading, and up here they will take your truck, inspect it(i assume to make sure it's not stolen or made of hot parts) and then assign it a vin. The only question is how long they will have it for I guess.

[QUOTE=71/454;1908374]a plate that gives the maximum weights i think.QUOTE]

if u look very close at the bottom of that plate u will see "CHASSIC NO." next to that will be ur serial number or VIN ## as some of us call it. that should match the title unless ur state used the mtr nuimber on thier titles...joe
