squeaky speedometer... I don't think it's the cable anymore

I have almost all of my dash off right now as part of the interior restoration, including the gauges themselves, the piece that the gauges screw into and that holds the bulbs is still attached at the moment.

One of the things on my list to tackle is a squeaky sound coming from the speedometer. This sound increases in frequency as I go faster and I was figuring I needed to take re-lube the cable in it's sleeve.

Anyway, I had to make a run to the parts store yesterday using the truck and I noticed that the sound is gone now that the speedometer is removed. On closer inspection, I see that there is some kind of black grease where the cable connects to the gauge... I don't know if that's the factory solution os a previous owner's attempt as quieting it.

So I figure I'll clean it up and re-lubricate, but I had a couple of questions first. What should I use as lubricant? I have a spray can of wet graphite, I also have a spray silicone, white lithium, and WD. I was thinking of using the graphite.

Also, I can imagine that the sound might be coming from sonmewhere inside the gauge. Should I attempt to take apart the gauge itself and get some lube in there?

i used aero kroil..kinda of a wd 40 stuff.squirted it down in there with the little tube and held it up awhile.it hasn't returned over a year later,but i don't drive it everyday.

Mine squeels on COLD days only but never on the HOT ones , what's up with that
