radiator size in my 80 GMC
I've put an old 49 International 1 ton body on a 80 GMC 3/4 ton 4/4 chassis. It has a 350 and now a NV4500 tranny . The chassis didn't have a radiator so I'm trying to figure out about how much fin area I need for a slightly pepped up 350. Is there a formula for this. I hate to guess and shell out for a custom radiator and not have it be cool enough.
Does anyone know what the fin area is of a manual trannied 350 in a 4/4? how many cores? Any help would be great attached a pic of what a truck like mine looks like. Mines not done yet and is a 4/4 with a stepside bed, but you get the idea. Jim Last edited by cobinder; 12-09-2006 at 09:27 PM. |

Re: radiator size in my 80 GMC
To be on the safe side I'd just install a 4 core radiator. You can't go wrong there.

I believe a stock rad for these trucks with a 350 was a 3-core. However, some step up to the 4-cores which was common on models with big blocks. The fin dimensions for a 3-core is 19" high and 28" wide (and a 1 1/2" deep). (Four cores are deeper.) Today, I saw a 40s Dodge Power Wagon being towed on a flat bed. It had the same color combo that you posted in your pic. Got any pics of your 49?

Re: radiator size in my 80 GMC
Rodz thanks for the info, those are the numbers I was looking for. Unfortunately my truck is being prepped for the frame to be painted. So I don't have any pics right now. The worst part of it is my shop is so small I can't get back far enough to take a pic of anything worth sharing. But it looks like you could just drive over LOL I'm in Lakewood, CO
thanks again Jim |
