Another van tilt question
Ive seen several articles on moving the neutral safety switch on a 70's van column, is that nessacery? Would like to get the wheel closer to the dash, if so how far do I have to move it. Also will the main wiring harness plug straight up to my 69 c-10 or do I need some type of an adapter.

Re: Another van tilt question
The existing location of the neutral safety switch causes an interference problem with the column support. I don't believe that you can move the column far enough to use the existing location without running into the dash with the shift bowl.
The van tilt needs an adapter to hook up the turn signal wire harness to the truck harness. Jim |

Re: Another van tilt question
Thanks for the help! Where do you get the adapter or do you have to fabricate one yourself.

Re: Another van tilt question
You can run a jumper wire across one of the two plugs that go to the neutral safety switch and eliminate the switch alltogether, but the truck will start in any gear. If your going to use the switch it needs to be moved, or it will interfere with the brake pedal. You can get an harness adaptor From GM for about $10

Re: Another van tilt question
Some of the older van tolts don't need the adapter, so no need to buy it untill you have the tilt.
Go to the GM dealer and ask for P/N 1894851 |

Re: Another van tilt question
I already have the column its from a 78 van, does that mean I need P/N 1894851? Im really illiterate about this column situation so any help and info would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know where that thread is that shows you step by step how to move the neutral safety switch?

Re: Another van tilt question
If the end of your harness plug is a half circle plug then you don't need adapter
If it is flat then you do

Re: Another van tilt question
I'm because I had this in my 71 SWB and I do not recall any fitment problem or do I remember modifing it. But I see in my 70 where it would hit! Is their a thread om moving the P/N switch and one for shorting a auto tilt column?
Here is a pic of the above mentioned adapter. Kevin LFD Inc. |

Re: Another van tilt question
1Lime - as shown by Rockrin the adapter is used to go from the flat turn signal to the curved truck harness. The replacement turn signal switches use the flat style. You can snake the wiring out easier than with the curved plastic.
As to your question about moving the column Putter did a thread on that. The main item requried is to modify the the outer jacket(tube) to index on the bump under the support bracket. On the van tilt this is 2 slots on the top surface of the mast. If you look at a truck column you will see 1 slot and 1 hole. You can move the column about 3 inches away from you until the bowl hits the cluster. The main reason for moving the N/S switch is that the wires don't reach up the column far enough on the unmodified van tilt. Of the top of my head I think you move it about 5 inches. If you move the column 3 inches you MAY not have to move the N/S. Look at FAQ for both threads. Do a search using subtle change for Putters post from April 2006
