lifter's ticking
I did some work on my 68 this weekend. I gave it a tuneup and rebuilt the carb on it. One of several problems I have found is that some of the lifters are stuck. This truck sat for 5-7 years without being started very often. Is there something I can use to free op the lifters so I don't have to tear down the engine right away? I just need to get it running good enough to pass colorado emissions.

Ticking lifters
I have never heard of a ticking lifter getting better. Might try some straight 40 weight oil. Also make sure it isn't just a loose rocker/s.

If its a lifter, I can't help, but if it is a rocker or a stuck valve, try dumping some tranny fluid down the carb as it is running. The high level of detergent in ATF can break these things loose. (sounds like B.S., but it works.

empty your oil out and then add a gallon of diesel fuel and run it for 5-10 minutes keeping an eye on your oil pressure. The oil in the diesel should help it out

try some Marval mistery oil in your next oil change! And use it regulary in your gas at fill up, and that should help free them up, and keep things nice and clean inside!
