pontiac 455?
Anyone put in pontiac motor in these old trucks? I know BOP uses diff. bellhousing pattern on earlier years. Fuel lines need relocated to other side. Any ideas on mounts? Hope to not aggravate any die hard chebby guys. I know early GMC's ran pontiac for a bit. Thanks in advance for the replys.

The one i looked at in Spokane used an Olds 455 with the early diesel engine
mounts . Not exactly what you asked about , lol . 409

my longhorn had a Pontiac 350 in it when i got it, get some engine stands from a 73 - 87 2 wheel drive truck, that's the main part of the swap.
you'll need to re-route the fuel line, either run a new line on the other side of the frame, or just run it across the front cross member. Doing this can actually help cool the fuel you'll want to locate a battery tray from a truck that has the Aux battery... this'll place it on the drivers side, like the pontiac starter. If you can't locate one, you could always get a much longer cable... go up a size or two due to the added length. A BOP tranny, or adapter plate will be needed. I would bolt the tranny in, acording to the shifter mounting brackets and stuff, then hang the engine in the frame rails, bolt the tranny in with 2 bolts, then install the motor mounts on the engine. (this is all much easier with the front clip removed) Now, you'll see where you need to install the engine stands. Some drilling may be needed. Mark the frame, remove the engine, and drill your holes. After that, it's pretty much a nuts and bolts operation. Mine had no hammering done on the firewall, no cutting on anything.... nuts and bolts and a couple holes drilled. |

Longhorn , thanks for the info. I see you run a caddy motor. I bet thats a torque monster. I've been working on a gto and toying with the idea of the 455 in my 67 stepside.

you have to get a oil filter relocation kit for it to clear the frame rails

on the 350, it clears... and while it's been a few years since I even looked at a pontiac mortor, I'm thinking externally the 455 is a carbon coppy of the 350. As a matter of fact, the oil filter was close to the pan like a chevy.... however, it was too damn close to the exhaust IMO.

Longhorn, You're correct about the pontiac motors. Basically the same block used for 326-455. They changed bore and stroke to get more cubes. I have a lead on one but will have to pull if i want it. I'll probably look at my 400 when it warms up to see if it be worth my while. I have a mostly original longbed so i thought I might do something different with this one. Thanks for the reply. 72army: Thanks for the info will check. I believe the oil filter on my early 400 does come down beside pan similiar to my chevys.
