Re: Alternator w/ ext reg wiring?
As you are facing the alternator the ground wire should be the wire to the left in the plug. It ties into the same wire that grounds the voltage regulator. Give me a second to post the pic.
EDIT: Here you go

Re: Alternator w/ ext reg wiring?
I am having charging problems... I am new to this truck and i am scared that the previous owner did some crazy stuff to the wiring....
Dave... is there 4 wires coming from the alt? the thick red wire, the 2 in the plug and then a ground? am i reading this right? it is a new voltage reg and the battery is good and the alt is good too

Re: Alternator w/ ext reg wiring?
That's correct. What kind of voltage reading are you getting? Did you just replace the voltage regulator, and if so did you have the battery disconnected?

Re: Alternator w/ ext reg wiring?
Check voltage at the battery with the truck running. Should be about 14 or 15 volts.

Re: Alternator w/ ext reg wiring?
I think the number of wires coming out of it but not sure.
Sounds like with 11.4 at the Batt. your alt is not charging. Do the pull the ground off the Batt while it is running and see if the truck dies out
