Well I should have known
That pulling my 350 out of the 68 would lead to many other issues
The whole thing started out with puling the motor, putting on a new flex plate, and a new oil pan gasket. Well once we got the pan off and saw that the gasket was shredded pretty good (explains that oil leak from the back which I thought was a rear main seal) we decided that we should pull the rear main cap and have a look at its seal. Yup bad. Now I didnt have a engine stand just a rented cherry picker. So knock knock on the neighbors door. In luck. He has one he is not using and is in no rush to get it back. Onto the stand it goes and turn it over. After pulling all of the caps and inspecting them we see a very small amount of scoring. Btw the we is my brother n law who raced pro gas for 20 years and knows his way around a small block. He said that he didnt see any loose metal (we looked again anyway) and thinks it was dirt due to some of the dirt we saw around it. So after changing out the seal we buttoned it up and in steps torqued it down to the right amount. Then I put the pan on and broke the head off of one of the bolts. But I got lucky there. I pulled the pan again and there was a big enough piece to grab it with a pair of pliers. Out it came. New bolt. In short the engine is still on a stand awaiting its new flex plate and a good cleaning. I didnt come this far to not clean the dirty bastage And now for the question. How am I going to torque the flexplate down on a engine stand? Thanks

My engine stand doesn't give me any room to install a flexplate, so I end up picking the block back up with the hoist and taking the engine off the stand. If you lower the engine down to make contact with the floor, but not let it support much of it's own weight, you can torque the flexplate bolts without too much problem. If you don't want to scratch the pan bottom, put some cardboard or something down first.

Mark,I think he meant how you kept it from turning when applying torque the bolts??? Can you use a piece of wood though the hole on the flex plate?

Use a impact wrench,it wont turn till it gets real tight

this is how i set up my engine stand head..
i can remove and install the flex plate at will..from underneath i have installed the starter with the flex plate and turned the engine over using a battery before. on the stand. i will most likley start the 400 on a home made stand in the garage.. you can bet i will have pictures Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-12-2007 at 06:56 AM. |

I use 1/2",my 3/8s dont work to good I just gotta make sure they dont get to tight and over tighten them

Did you just give a shot of threadlocker in each hole? Or did you coat the threads on the bolt?

i cleaned the bolts with brake cleaner to remove the oil and put it on the threads and torqued to specs. with the impact

Keep in mind that pressure will be lost with that long cord so you wont have as much pressure as if it was connected to a cord not as long.
