4-spd standard or THM350?
ok yall im setting my body on a 84 frame. my truck currently has the 4-spd but im giving serious thought to using a THM350 i have here. i mean when your on a date and you have to say "lemme take my hand off your leg so i can shift honey" it gets a bit old. lemme know what you think.

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
I used to drive nothing but sticks. Now driving my '68 with a manual 3 speed (3 on the tree). In traffic or especially when I'm stopped on a steep incline with another driver that just has to be right on my ass...or in those RARE situations where you must bring food and drink into your pride and joy (so you can eat on the run to make up time) and then have to shift and spill the fries....I'm wishing I had an auto.

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
I love my 4spd. If I had to choose between it and a auto with overdrive it would be tougher. The granny low is great off road and I prefer a stick for the trails.
If I had a 2wd, I'd deffinately prefer the auto, even without the OD.

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
I love my auto because I can eat, talk on the phone, change the radio, and play the air drums, all without having to be interrupted by shifting..
But that's just me.. Elias |

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
Nuthin like holding it to the floor and letting the tranny bark through the gears for ya. It's bad enough to have no cup holder with an auto... Only manual I'd consider would be a 5 or 6 speed on a 2wd. 4wd I can see the justification for the stick, but with your truck/options I'd go with the auto.

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
If you have a 420/465 your truck should be much faster with the auto. My 420 takes forever to shift. At least it's notchy and the shifter has a super long throw.

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
If this is your daily driver and you have to sit in grid-locked traffic for hours at a time, the auto is your choice....
I have an M-21 4spd in my '63 and there's nothing better than shifting gears and popping the clutch....but that is my weekend driver

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
well this is my (soon to be) daily driver, and well, like i said up top its a pain on dates, and when you need to flip somebody off for riding your ass. which reminds me, my buddy was pissed the other day and somebody started riding his ass, so he hit the e-brake then let off real quick!!, they stayed 2 car lengths behind him the rest of the way!!! lol

An M-21 is more of a muscle car tranny, and shifts much better than the "truck" four speeds with the granny low. If the tranny is original, I think it should be a 420. Reverse is left and down on my 420, I'm not sure about the 465, but I know it's different.

Re: 4-spd standard or THM350?
sounds like a 420, the SM-465 has reverse to the right, then down.
I have the 465, and its terrible. I've been looking for a muncie car four speed, but they're just so darn expensive. |
