Re: What's the purpose?

Looks like some kind of funky overload leaf. I don't think it was factory, though.

Re: What's the purpose?

Homemade lift kit? It also kind of looks like a bump stop or spring helper, that bolt going through the uprights looks like it's meant to hit the springs should they get down that far. A picture with the tire off may help or maybe one from under the truck to get a better angle. Does it extend over the axle or are both ends on one side of the axle?

Re: What's the purpose?

looks like a combination homemade lift block traction bar. I'm no expert but are you supposed to have a different number of leafs on each side? One looks like a 1/2 ton leaf that the other looks like a 1 ton leaf.

difference between front and rear, that looks like a spring overload setup or anti squat something or another

You are right on what they are. The different pics are front and rear axles, hence the # of leaves.
I don't think they are homemade though, But they do look like cheapie/ universal pieces.

The two pics are one from the front spring and one from the rear spring. They are some goofy old school traction device. My suggestion would be to yank that junk out and put a lifted spring back in to make up for the lost lift from the blocks.

Re: What's the purpose?

not good anytime your stack multiple items (i.e. blocks and that traction widget) It looks like it has worked for a few years but if that was a highway rig then I would change it out. if it's pure trail then wait till she breaks i guess...
