High pitched whine ????

No, it's not my ex-wife !!!!!

Started yesterday, at first I thought it was a new engine noise coming thru the radio (yes I listen to AM), turned off radio and the noise was still there.

Checked it out today and sounds like its coming from front of engine. First thought is water pump is going out. I've never had one go out so I don't know what it sounds like when it's gettin' ready to go.

It kinda sounds like a turbo on a semi (but not near as loud),,,, except it doesn't change too much with engine speed.

Any help will be greatly appreciated !!!!!!!

Re: High pitched whine ????

Check your power steering fluid. That makes kind of a whining noise if the fluid is low.

Re: High pitched whine ????

Mine did that today, right before the alternator belt broke. Turned out the alternator froze up. Tomorrow, new parts!

Re: High pitched whine ????

Remove the belt to see if it's the alternator whining, not the belt. It won't hurt to run it a couple of minutes without the water pump turning.

Re: High pitched whine ????

I had something similar happen on mine. It turned out to be a vacuum leak at the base of the carb. It re tightened the bolts and it was fine.

Re: High pitched whine ????

My alternator bearings are making a terrible whine and you probably have the same issue. Loosen the alternator and remove the belt from the alt pully, start the truck and see if the whine goes away, it did on mine.

Re: High pitched whine ????

I figured you probably had a Nascar show on am radio and the high pitched whine was Jeff Gordon whinin about Jimmy Johnson(or any body else for that matter) for racin him too hard! You turned it off and the whine didnt stop tho.

Seriously tho, if you dont have one of them stethescopes, you can use the longest screwdriver or plastic handled prybar you can get your hands on to roughly determine where the noise is coming from, just be extremely careful since the engine is running. Touch the tip on the areas in question, and put your ear to the end of the handle. Where ever its loudest is the area to look for a problem. Poor mans troubleshooting. Sometimes if the vibration associated with the noise is extreme enuff, just touching the tool to areas will have a "feel" in the handle that corresponds to the noise without lookin like a duma$$ with a screwdriver against your ear! It can work tho.

Re: High pitched whine ????

run it real hard and see if it sprays coolant everywhere, if it does, it's your water pump, if it doesnt, good luck : )

Re: High pitched whine ????

grab the fan if the shaft wobbles its shot..
theres also a weep hole on the bottom of the pump. if the inner seals shot it will leak..

if you have a fan clutch you might as well feel the front coil thermo spring if it's oily the fan clutch is shot.

if yours has a fan clutch..?

Re: High pitched whine ????

Take the belt off and spin your pulleys by hand. Hopefully whatever it is is bad enough you can hear it by just spinning the pulleys. I have used the scredriver to the ear thingy before and diagnosed many water pumps and alternators that way. As said before, just be real careful around the moving parts. You'll want to check the front and back of the alternator as I believe there are bearings in both ends.
